This is the review which I have been looking forward to ever since the Nokia Lumia 1020 was announced on the 11th of July 2013. It is obvious that the Nokia Lumia 1020 is the best camera phone in the market today and I can’t wait to get to the camera section of this review, but is the camera everything? Does the Nokia Lumia 1020 have enough to be called the best smart phone or is it just a smart phone with a great camera? The only way to find out is to compare it with the industry leading Samsung Galaxy S4. Will the Lumia 1020 be able to live up to the hype? Read on to find out...

    Size and weight

Nokia has been hard at work when it comes to reducing the size and weight of their smart phones and they have been making improvements with every release. But considering the Lumia 1020 has a 41 MP camera, it is obvious the phone isn’t going to be too thin or light. The Lumia 1020 measures 130.4 x 71.4 x 10.4 mm and weighs in at 158 g. The Galaxy S4 on the other hand measures 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9 mm and weighs just 130 g. The Galaxy S4 is longer so that it can incorporate the larger screen but apart from that it is thinner, narrower and lighter.

Since the Galaxy S4 is easier to hold than the Lumia 1020, it is only fair that Samsung takes this point.

    Display

In terms of display Samsung pretty much has everything under control. The Galaxy S4 comes with a 5.0” Super AMOLED touch screen that offers a maximum resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels which provides a better viewing experience as compared to the Lumia 1020 which comes with a 4.5” AMOLED touch screen and a maximum resolution of 1,280 x 768 pixels. Even in terms of pixel density, the Galaxy S4 is clearly superior with 441 ppi which is a lot more than the 334 ppi on the Lumia 1020. What does this mean? It means that you might be able to click outstanding photos with the Lumia 1020, but you are a lot better off viewing them on the Galaxy S4.

Samsung picks up this point as well.

    Memory & Storage

Nokia has managed to increase the RAM in the Lumia 1020 which now comes with 2 GB of RAM. But the Galaxy S4 has 2 GB of RAM as well which means that all Nokia did with the increase in RAM was come level with other top-end smart phones in the market. Nothing special here. In terms of memory, Nokia still doesn’t offer expandable memory and the Lumia 1020 is only available in one version with 32 GB of user memory. Considering this smart phone is going to be clicking images with a 41 MP camera, the phone should have had memory expansion capabilities. The Galaxy S4 on the other hand has every possible memory expansion capability you could possibly want up to 64 GB. Add to this that the phone is available in 16, 32 and 64 GB versions and you certainly have a winner on your hands as far as storage is concerned.

I am extremely disappointed with Nokia for the lack of interest in providing its users with memory expansion capabilities. Samsung certainly knows how to keep its users happy. The third point in a row for Samsung.

    Camera

Finally some respite for the Lumia 1020. This is one point it is sure to win. The 41 MP camera on the back of the Lumia 1020 is certainly a revelation as far as cell phone photography is concerned. Nokia did it earlier with the Nokia 808 PureView and they have done it again with the Lumia 1020. This smart phone also has a xenon flash on the back which can provide for some pretty amazing photography even in the darkest of places. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but the 13 MP camera on the Galaxy S4 can’t do much to compete here. It is a wonderful camera but just not as good.

Nokia should get at least a couple of points for this one since this smart phone can easily substitute most digital cameras out there today. That is why I award 2 points to Nokia.

    OS & Performance

The Galaxy S4 is running on the latest Android operating system 4.2.2 (JellyBean) while the Lumia 1020 runs on Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows Phone 8. Both of these operating systems have their own pros and cons and it would be unfair to call one better than the other. In terms of performance as well, both these cell phones are pretty fast with the Galaxy S4 running on a Quad-core, 1900 MHz, Krait 300 processor and Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 APQ8064T chip while the Lumia 1020 runs on a Dual-core, 1500 MHz, Krait processor and Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8960 chip. Both phones have excellent graphics processors as well and it would be hard to choose a winner between them.

Therefore, this one is a draw.

    Battery

Even though the Lumia 1020 has a significantly smaller battery, at 2,000 mAh as compared to the 2,600 mAh batter on the Galaxy S4, both smartphones are offering pretty much the same stand by time. If you go in to facts, the Galaxy S4 offers a stand by time of 15.4 days while the Lumia 1020 offers a stand by time of 16 days. Not much of a difference but what is worth mentioning is that even though the Galaxy S4 has a much larger battery, it doesn’t offer quite as much extended battery life.

But is that enough to award this point to the Lumia 1020? Unfortunately, not.

    Price

In terms of pricing there isn’t too much of a difference between both these phones either. While the Galaxy S4 is selling around $ 690 the Lumia 1020 is going to be selling around $ 650. Considering the Lumia 1020 has a far better camera on the back and the fact that it is priced $ 40 cheaper, a lot of people might slide towards the Nokia simple because they can get a really cool smart phone and an amazing camera in the same deal.

If you look at value for money, Nokia surely wins this point.

    Conclusion

So there you have it, the scores are tied at 3 each. But that in no way means that both these phones are similar. In fact, they can’t be more different. The Samsung Galaxy S4 is clearly the better smartphone among the two as it is easy to hold, has a better display and offers multiple storage options. The Lumia 1020 has three points simply because it has an amazing camera and is cheaper. My verdict is, unless you are looking to buy the Nokia Lumia 1020 for its photographing capabilities, stick with the Galaxy S4. It remains the better smart phone.

Re: The Nokia Lumia 1020 vs the Samsung Galaxy S4. Does Nokia offer anything more than a fancy camer

I would just like to add to this comparison that the Lumia 1020 is now rumored to cost around $ 750 free of contract. I'm not too sure how significant that is though since you can pick it up for $ 250 on AT&T.
