Now that you have seen the LG G2 stand up to the Samsung Galaxy S4 and thrash the Motorola Moto X, let’s see how it stands up to one of my personal favorites the Nokia Lumia 1020. While the Lumia 1020 is essentially a camera phone it is still considered the flag ship Nokia smart phone today. How will this one go? Will it be another landslide victory for LG or will Nokia put up a fight? Read on to find out...

Size and weight

Nokia has been making smart phones for as long as I can remember and I am really disappointed as far as the size and weight of the most of their smart phones are concerned. Surprisingly though the Lumia 1020 doesn’t have this problem. It measures 130.4 x 71.4 x 10.4 mm while the LG G2 measures 138.5 x 70.9 x 8.9 mm. In terms of weight the Lumia 1020 weighs 158 g while the LG G2 weighs 143 g. What needs to be accounted for here is that the LG G2 has a much larger display while the Lumia 1020 has a much larger camera. Both these smart phones have their own pros and cons.

This one is a draw.

Display

Both these smart phones have their own pros and cons here as well. The LG G2 comes with a 5.2” IPS LCD touch screen while the Lumia 1020 comes with a 4.5” AMOLED touch screen. In terms of pixel density, the LG G2 has 423 ppi while the Lumia 1020 has 334 ppi. Both smart phones have quite a few similar features but the Lumia 1020 also has a polarizing filter. Even the peak brightness on the Lumia 1020 is more than the LG G2 at 600 cd/m2 as opposed to 450 cd/m2.

But still, I believe the LG G2 should get this point for its larger screen and higher pixel density.

Memory & Storage

Both smart phones have 2 GB of RAM in them although the LG G2 has a higher clocking speed of 800 MHz as compared to the Lumia 1020 which has a clocking speed of 500 MHz. So you can expect slightly better performance from the LG G2. The storage options in both smart phones are quite limited though. The LG G2 comes in 16 and 32 GB versions while the Lumia 1020 only comes in a 32 GB version. Neither smart phone offers expandable storage either. Quite disappointing for two top end smart phones isn’t it?

This one is a draw as well.

Camera

This is one point that any top end smart phone will have trouble with when comparing cameras with the Lumia 1020. The LG G2 comes with a 13 MP camera and LED flash on the back that supports full HD video recording at 60 fps. Unfortunately though, it doesn’t even come close to the amazing 41 MP camera and Xenon, LED flash on the Lumia 1020. In any other comparison, the LG G2 would stand a pretty good chance of coming out on top or at the most being tied. But here, it can only come in second place.

The point goes to the Lumia 1020.

OS & Performance

The LG G2 runs on the latest Android operating system 4.2.2 JellyBean while the Lumia 1020 runs on the latest Microsoft operating system, Windows Phone 8. Both these operating systems have their own advantages and it wouldn’t be fair to call either of them better than the other. But, as far as technology is concerned, the LG G2 is far ahead with its Quad Core, 2260 MHz, Krait 400 processor and Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 MSM8974 chip as compared to the Dual Core, 1500 MHz, Krait processor and Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8960. Even though the Lumia 1020 has such a wonderful camera, it does disappoint a lot when it comes to technology.

This point goes to the LG G2.

Battery

The Lumia 1020 comes with a 2,000 mAh battery which has a stand by time of 16 days. That is decent for a smart phone which such a large camera although the 3,000 mAh battery of the LG G2 will definitely be providing a much longer stand by time. And with smart phones like the Motorola Moto X offering stand by times of 24 days, I think Nokia really missed a step with this smart phone. The Lumia 1020 could have done with a bigger camera even if it meant it would be a few grams heavier.

The LG G2 is starting to pull away now with its third point.

Price

The Lumia 1020 does have a 41 MP camera but is that enough to explain the $ 735 price tag? The LG G2, on the other hand, is rumored to cost between $ 600 and $ 630. While you may argue that the Lumia 1020 carries out the role of a smart phone as well as a digital camera, I say that it just about justifies its price. The LG G2 does a lot more than justify its price though and proves that you can get a lot more bang for your buck if you buy a smart phone from a less popular manufacturer.

This point goes to the LG G2 as well.

Conclusion

At the end of this comparison, Nokia lovers like me might not be too impressed. While the Nokia Lumia 1020 does dominate the point on cameras it is quite far behind as far as most other aspects of a smart phone are concerned. And if we are going to use the LG G2 as the bench mark for the next generation of smart phones, Nokia has its work cut for itself. They better get started soon...
