The Apple iPhone 5 was considered one of the best smart phones around when it was released in September 2012. Unfortunately, almost a year has passed since then and the iPhone 5 may still be popular, but it definitely isn’t one of the best smart phones around. With industry giants like Nokia and Samsung stepping up with their smart phones and players like HTC, Sony, Motorola and LG entering the top end smart phone market, Apple hasn’t done much since last year to top the iPhone 5. I can’t wait to see what they come out with this year (considering this will be the first smart phone they release without Steve Jobs inputs at all). But for now, I am going to compare it with the Sony Xperia Z...

Size and weight

There is no doubt that the Xperia Z is much longer and wider than the Apple iPhone 5. It measures 139 x 71 x 7.9 mm while the iPhone 5 measures 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6 mm. But the shocking part is that the Xperia Z is almost as thin as the iPhone 5. I mean, 0.3 mm isn’t anything substantial. The Xperia Z is much heavier than the iPhone 5 though at 143 g to its 112 g. But when you consider the fact that the Xperia Z has a display which is an inch larger I think you will forgive it for being so much bigger. I am impressed with the thickness though.

This one is a draw although I really feel like giving this point to Sony.

Display

The iPhone 5 comes with a 4.0” IPS LCD touch screen which is nothing compared to the stunning 5.0” TFT touch screen on the Xperia Z. Albeit, the TFT screen is a little old but the Xperia Z has an amazing pixel density of 443 ppi which is much more than the 326 ppi on the iPhone 5. The Xperia Z also comes with scratch resistant glass (Dragontrail), not to mention the fact that it is waterproof and dustproof.

There is only one winner here and that is the Xperia Z.

Memory & Storage

Even though Apple offers its smart phones in 3 versions (16, 32 and 64 GB of internal storage), it lacks external storage options and that is what makes the Xperia Z shine even though it has just 16 GB of internal memory. The Xperia Z supports storage expansion up to 32 GB and this basically gives you unlimited storage (just keep buying knew memory cards). The Xperia Z runs on 2 GB of RAM while the iPhone 5 runs on a little less than 1 GB.

While I have never understood what someone needs so much memory on their smart phone for everyone isn’t like me. This point will go to the Xperia Z simply because it offers expandable storage.

Camera

The Xperia Z comes with an incredible 13.1 MP camera on the back which makes the 8 MP camera on the iPhone 5 look like a kids toy. Both smart phones have digital image stabilization for their cameras. Both even support video recording at 1080p HD.

There isn’t much more you could want from a smart phone and as far as photography is concerned I think this point should be a draw since neither smart phone really offers anything substantial.

OS & Performance

The Xperia Z comes with the latest Android operating system 4.2.2 (JellyBean) which is quite cool. But the iPhone 5 runs on iOS 6.1 which has made a name for itself as well. I wouldn’t want to compare both operating systems though as they both have their pros and cons. The story is quite the same as far as performance is concerned. The Xperia Z has a Quad core, 1500 MHz, Krait processor and a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 chip. The iPhone 5 comes with a Dual core, 1300 MHz, Apple Swift processor and Apple A6 chip. In terms of graphics, the iPhone 5 comes with a PowerVR SGX543MP3 processor while the Xperia Z comes with an Adreno 320 processor.

Basically, both smart phones have quite old technology and there is nothing really to set them apart her.

Battery

This is one point where Apple has always suffered and the 1,440 mAh battery on the iPhone 5 doesn’t really look like it’s going to change anything. On the other hand, the Xperia Z comes with a 2,330 mAh battery which provides quite a long battery life. While the iPhone 5 has a standby time of around 9 days the Xperia Z has a standby time of almost 23 days.

Now that is a huge difference and this is definitely a point that is going to Sony.

(Sony Xperia Z - Three / Apple iPhone 5 - Zero)

Price

The iPhone 5 costs just under $ 670 (free of contract) which is a little steep in my opinion. And you can pick up the Xperia Z for around $ 645 (free of contract). Considering the iPhone 5 hasn’t even won a single point in this comparison I can’t really see why anyone would prefer to pay an extra $ 25 for it. I think Sony really hit the nail on the head while pricing the Xperia Z while Apple got a little greedy with its pricing and tried to capitalize on all the goodwill Steve Jobs worked so hard to earn.

Clearly, this point goes to the Xperia Z.

Conclusion

When the score at the end of a comparison reads 4 points to 0, there really isn’t much more I can add to it. The numbers speak for themselves. The Sony Xperia Z is a much better smart phone than the Apple iPhone 5 and the only reason I can see for anyone choosing the Apple iPhone 5 over the Sony Xperia Z is brand loyalty.
