Im waiting for my new ZTE Merit from Straight Talk and I understand they don't permit Tethering... but all I need it for is simple websurfing while on the road with my laptop, so Im not concerned about getting caught for excess data usage cause that would never happen with what I need it for. Anyone either know how this can be done or where I might find some information on it? Google isnt being as helpful as usual and I assume its cause its fairly new to the market from what I saw. Any help would be appreciated.

That's against Terms of Service and you have the risk of your account being terminated. I wouldn't recommend doing it. I'm not going to explain how to do it since it is against the Terms of Service.

I just don't see the big deal... I don't game or anything, so to be forced to stare at a tiny screen for any length of time versus a simple tether and use my laptop just makes more sense when there is no chance of going over the not so unlimited... unlimited data transfer.

I understand, and agree with you. I think tethering should be allowed, for light web use. They could even have some type of limit or throttle those who are tethering, but I think it should be allowed.

Exactly what I was thinking... other companies offer it for like $10 extra... which in my book would be well worth the added fee. Question though, aside from the fact that excess data usage... is there any way for them to actually know your tethering? You know.. like if I find a way to do it. Cause I found a few sites talking about how to do it on the Avail and I believe the Merit is a very close relative.

If they wanted to, they could disable tethering. I know with some providers, such as Cricket Wireless, there is a page asking the customer to add tethering to their plan. So, they must be able to see what device is using the Internet connection. I'm not sure if Straight Talk does this or not. They might just notice the increase in data usage.

Harry, I'm not sure if you ended up doing anything, but you may be able to use a wi-fi hotspot app for the phone, like PdaNet+
