    Hi,

I've seen a phone I like the look of in Tesco, sold as Vodaphone PAYG. I'm
on Virgin PAYG and would like to stay there.
If I bought the Vodaphone phone, could I throw away the SIM that comes with
it and stick in the SIM from my Virgin phone? Would I need to unlock the
new phone? If so, what's the best/cheapest way to do it?

    Thanks.

I was mistaken - it is in fact a T-mobile phone:

You can simply put a Virgin SIM into a T-Mobile phone without any need
    of unlocking.

I use a Virgin contract sim in a T-Mobile Nokia 6630. When could I not use
    this sim with aT-Mobile phone?

Indeed you could - whether it would work or not is another matter, but you
    didn't ask that! ;-))))))))

    Yes, probably

    > If so, what's the best/cheapest way to do it?

    Depends what phone it is.

    1. AFAIK Virgin is part of the T-Mobile system. So you might not have
    to unlock.

    2. Some phones can be unlocked over the Internet for a modest fee.

    3. Some newer phones cannot be unlocked yet - by any means (so they
    say??).

    4. Unlocking usually costs about ten quid from your local independent
phone shop. Prolly safer than trying to do it yourself. See Yellow
    Pages for details.

Not true but you seem to correct yourself in a later post.

T-mobile are the SP and will allow any of the virtual networks (Virgin etc.)
to use their phones as they still get revenue from it. But it doesn't work
the other way round, Virgin get nothing from T-Mobile, so they often lock
their phones so you can only use a Virgin sim.

    Again not true.

There are a number of asic 11 phones now out that cannot be done for free,
including, 1110i, 1112, 2310, 2610. Most of the new phones launched at the
bottom end are now asic 11. In fact it is becoming difficult to find a 1xxx
series phone for sale now that isn't one of the new ones.
