My aging Kyocera 2135 has recently started to act up, but I'm
reluctant to replace it because the newer phones don't have
the features I like (rugged single piece with no unnecessary
    gadgets or buttons).

Sometimes it will reset (beep then startup "Verizon" screen, searching,
etc. as if I had just turned it on).

If I leave it on the charger it tends to shut off (screen reads "charge
    is complete, phone is off").

Sometimes when I turn the phone back on I see
    prl.c
    5209

It may or may not recover from that state. If not I sometimes
need to remove and replace the battery pack.

Has anyone else seen this sort of behavior? If so
is it fixable or do I need to bite the bullet and "upgrade"
to a new phone with all the annoyances that go with it?

    Thanks for any help,

    Gabor

Re: Kyocera 2135 resets itself or shuts off

I have a Kyocera 2235 and had been for the past month getting prl.c 7764 and my phone would power off. It was random how long it would even stay on, sometimes barely a second other times several hours. This coincidentally started after I updated my "preferred roaming list capabilities" (prl.c) with Verizon. I think the connection must have been a little choppy even though Verizon said it was successful. Verizon service - several different times would say that I just had to replace my phone with a newer model. I didn't like anything available compared with my Kyocera! I even bought a used Kyocera off of e-bay -- and found out that Verizon wouldn't activate because it wasn't enabled with the GPS chip for the e-911 capability. It was too old. It's been a month, so I updated my roaming capabilities again - on a hunch that perhaps that last file downloaded in May was corrupted... and now my phone is no longer powering off!! I've waited a few days to make sure it stays powered on -- and it has! - sorry about the long story, but the prl.c finally gave me a clue that it was a preferred roaming list ... and the error code might be the file# that was downloaded that has an issue. My theory - if the list is corrupt, your phone can't detect the preferred cell towers to use - and if it can't do that it must signal itself to power off. If it's been several weeks, try downloading your roaming file again - hopefully it's been updated/newer file and will be successful for you.

Re: Kyocera 2135 resets itself or shuts off

Well, I'm still knocking on wood but that seemed to do the trick. So far two days without a reset. By the way I had to do some digging to find out how to update the roaming (*228 option 2 for Verizon Wireless). While I was searching I put in a post to VZW customer support and they responded that the roaming should be updated every 30 to 45 days! I have to admit I didn't read the users manual when I signed up for service, but I always assumed that the phone would just work. Interestingly, my daughter recently had a more severe case of a similar problem on a Samsung phone (again with a prl.c code). I think it may have been the same thing, but she has replaced her phone since then. My guess is that some recent upgrade to the local network caused our older roaming codes to malfunction. Thanks for your help.

    Regards,
    Gabor
