I've been looking into just using a kyocera pre-paid hydro instead of a much more expensive and less durable ipod, but im wondering how the actual phone service part of that would work. Would i need to sign a contract just to get the thing activated and all that? Is there any way I could buy the actual phone and not agree to any kind of phone service?

The Hydro is a boost mobile phone. You can get one without a contract and use all the phone features apart from wireless data and making calls. The cheapest I found is on Amazon: Amazon.com: Kyocera Hydro Prepaid Android Phone (Boost Mobile): Cell Phones & Accessories
If you want to activate with boost mobile later, you'll have to call them, pay for a plan, and activate the phone. (they're CDMA, so there is no SIM card)

So I would be able turn it on and upload music, use the camera, etc without ever activating the actual phone features or paying for a service provider?
