If you are going to use free Nav and Email, I would highly recommend purchasing the $15 a month, or similar internet package. That way you can send and receive data without the high suspicion you will be receiving if you are using those programs (which send & receive data) without a data package. This will be much cheaper than paying $2.99 or whatever it is per MB, and you can use the internet on your phone too, which, I assume, is a big reason that you decided to purchase a 3G phone with EV-DO.

    Re: Lg Dare bitpim

Ok for the record, it seems to me like everyone is making this harder than it should be. I downloaded the new test version of BitPim 1.0.6.20080804. I installed the drivers for my phone, and I had an older version of VCast from my girlfriends Venus. I opened the new BitPim, and plugged in my phone, and it recognized it as a Dare (VX9700) all on its own. I did what everyone else did (open the filesystem tree (bottom of the left of the screen), open up Brew, Mod, 10889, and Ringtones. I simply drug cropped MP3's to the folder. After it transferred them, i unplugged my phone and restarted. The ringtones were on my phone. This might work for some of you too!

Okay... I read thru the instruction on how to get free Navi and Free
ringtones. It's pretty simple if you read it right, but I'm skeptical about data transfer rate. I hope they don't charge me when I use the Navi.

I do want to thank Trbomp5 for the Step-by-step instruction. Thank You.

This is really OT for a thread discussing BitPim, its more on point for the thread discussing the hacks to get the free apps... but...

To use a Dare, Voyager, or Glyde you need to be on a nationwide plan.

NW plans charge $1.99 per MB (rounded up).

To browse and download apps will cost MB, no matter which app it is.

If you are subscribed to VZNav, data it uses (for maps/directions) is not to be charged.. BUT if you are NOT subscribed, then I wouldn't expect VZW's system to exempt you from those data charges, instead you'll probably be billed just like any other data usage.

Any user on a nation wide plan user that expects to have any data usage should get the $15 Vcast Vpack to cover their data usage.. Its certainly cheaper than the $1.99 per MB used that you will be billed without it.

Hello, I'm new to the site and I was wondering if there was a reason why you said the lg dare was the Vx 9100?

Hello. I'm still getting used to the site. But my question is; Why do you say to set it to the Vx 9100?

I dont understand why now people are being advised to purchase the "$15/month package...I thought that there was nothing to worry about if you deleted the application after bringing it over to Bitpim. I read that the only charge would be a small fee of a dollar for having the program for the 20 mns. I would really appreciate some clarification on this, please.

Thanks for the info... I guess me being skeptical about the Data Transfer Rate is wise. No point in me going around and brag about the free Navi if it's going to charge me.

When the LG Dare first came out, bitpim didn't fully support it, so you could not fully access the phone's file system to read/write BREW files/folders...

I'll try and make a long story short...

Verizon's phones use Qualcomm's brew. Brew imposes certain locks/limits on the phones and restricts access to certain parts of their file system.

DM Mode is a "test" or "diag" mode of the phone. When the phone is in this mode, the brew locks/limits can be bypassed.. so you can Read/Write what is normally locked down.

The commands Bitpim issued for putting the Env2/VX9100 into DM Mode was very similar to what the Dare/VX9700 needed.. so, by manually setting Bitpim to the VX9100 even when a Dare/VX9700 was connected was a way to try to get the Dare into DM Mode before support was added into BitPim.

Nationwide plans bill data at rates of $1.99 per MB (rounded up to the next whole MB).

Ok, lets use VZNav as an example.

Browse then download the VZNav app... that data used while accessing the catalog and downloading the app is billable @ $1.99 per MB (rounded up to the next whole MB), and you get hit with the $9.99 subscription fee.

While you are subscribed to VZNav, Verizon's system does not charge you for MB used while VZNav is running, downloading maps, etc.

Unsubscribe from VZNav which deletes it from your phone. According to Verizon's system you are no longer subscribed to this app.

If you "restore" VZNav to the phone in any way other than re-subscribing.. Verizon's system will still show you as not subscribed. What tells VZW to exempt you from data fees for VZnav downloading maps, etc. rather than charging you $1.99 per MB? So there is a very good chance you will get billed for this data usage.

Now, if you subscribe to the $15 Vcast Vpack, all data that is normally used for Mobile Web, Get-it-Now, etc.. will be covered, and data usage for any apps that you are using either legitimately or via a HACK that might get billed... would be covered...

At $1.99 per MB.. it takes only 7+ MB before you hit the point at which Vcast Vpack pays for itself... Think of it.. 7.1MB rounds up to 8MB and 8 @ $1.99 = $15.92.. So data billed per MB past that point will be greater than the cost of the Vpack.

So, keep an eye on the Data usage of your Bill. If you don't get charged for data.. or its less than about 7 MB per month, fine. Don't purchase the $15 per month Vcast Vpack.
