Hi,
I was reading a post about how to make an MP3 your ringtone on an LG Dare phone. I didn't quite understand. Can anyone tell me if its possible to make an MP3 (thats under "my sounds" on my phone already) my ringtone? I tried sending it to myself via txt message but it doesnt give any option to "save as ringtone." Thanks in advance!
Several peeps on this forum say that you can send an EMAIL to yourself that includes the MP3 ringtone, then just SAVE it as a ringtone to your Dare. I've never been able to get these to work (I don't have the email app installed) so I just resorted to using BitPim .... I find BitPim very easy to use. There is a feature in BitPim whereby you just select a 30 Sec. portion of any MP3 File and save it as a ringtone directly on your phone. YMMV.
thanks for your help! I downloaded bitpim but am currently having trouble with bitpim recognizing my phone. It asks to select a port but every one i choose doesn't work? hate to bother you again... but do you know a solution for this? thanks in advance!
Do you have the DRIVER installed from the CD that comes with the Dare? You must have that installed 1st. Then Windows (?) should auto-detect the phone when you launch BitPim.
my LG Dare did not come with any CD when i bought it. i even asked a telus associate from a telus store if this phone comes with a CD and she said no. is downloading the driver an option? and yes, i do have windows as an operating system. thanks again for helping me out.

If you have a data plan for that LG Dare as I do you should be able to send whatever you want to your phone. I am a Verizon subscr with the unlimited data plan and the I use the option that uses your full 10 digit cell # (your cell number)@vzpix.com as a contact on your phone and send whatever ringtones I make myself directly to that address. Your subscriber may have you jumping through a different set of hoops or may possibly force you to buy them from their own catalog of bogus tones. I make my own using freeware called Audacity to select and export a WAV file from an original MP3 song or whatever and then pull them through an encoder (also freeware) called Razorlame which then convert any WAV back to MP3 format for the phone to use as a ringtone. When properly set up it takes approx 5 minutes to batch one up. Once again, the finished ringtone is then sent from my computer's email to my cell via the method above. When the tone comes in as a text email with the attached MP3 ringtone you then read the text and as you are reading the tone should begin to play. As the tone is playing, from the Options button (lower right) you should be able to select Save AS Ringtone AND/OR Save AS Sound. From there you should be able to map the sound as a ringtone to use under Settings & Tools, Sound Settings and then Call Sounds.
Audacity is GREAT .... I use it as well ... But since I don't use TEXT MESSAGING, I just Copy & Paste the ringtone to my phone via BitPim .... Takes me about 3 mins to process a ringtone form start to finish.
Hey, i downloaded everthing from the website you specified. but when it tries to recognize the wireless device it says it cant. does com1 and com2 (ports i think?) mean anything specific? cause it searches com1 and com2 then gives me the message. can i plug into any USB port on my tower or is there a certian location for com1 and com2? sorry, i feel like an idiot now...lol.
sorry, i should be more specific. the vz access manager does not recognize the wireless device. i went to the website you sent to me and followed the promps until it said it was successfully downloaded and finished. i'm going to try bitpim and see if i have any lick there. i appreciate all you've helped me with!
well bitpim still doesnt recognize it. thanks for your efforts. i will take your advice and ask dennis o and see if he can help. take care.

Reason: Auto-merged Double post
I'm not quite sure what you're expecting when you plug the phone into a USB port .. And YES, any USB port is eligible to be used. What is the setting for your DARE's "USB DETECTION"? (under Settings & Tools).. When I plug my phone into my PC, all I get is the normal sound that my PC connected to it... There's really nothing more I can do with it at that point. By that I mean there is no USB device to be seen under MY COMPUTER. I have my USB Detection set to "SYNC DATA" - but again, as I mentioned earlier, I just prefer to manage everything using BitPim .. just MY preference since I don't have a Texting Plan .... like, ahem, some people who prefer to use that to manage their ringtones.
BTW, BitPim will recognize the Dare as LG-VX9700 ... if it does NOT, you can set it to that under the "EDIT/SETTINGS" ....
Hope this helps ...

Most all VZW subscribers have the ability to create their phones own email address whether you want one or not. If you have a small (30sec) MP3 on a computer with an eamil account you can send it to that address (Your10DigitCellNumber@vzwpix.com)
When you create that contact on your computer just attach the MP3 to an email saying "Thanx" and open the email up and use the Save AS Ringtone Option. Then check your ringtones to see if it there. Use a short name for the MP3.
Good Luck.
