Using earbuds with Voyager for music problems

After having purchased my new voyager I went and bought some 3.5mm to 2.5mm adapters so I could use my standard earbuds to listen to mp3's. Much to my chagrin it doesn't work. When I am in music mode and plug in the earbuds it resets the screen back to the opening login window for phone use. The phone speakers never go off but keep playing the music when I do get it to marginally work. The sound out of the earbuds is crackly and doesn't sound like its stereo at all. I am afraid to plug in a headset again for fear of frying something. Yes the earbuds work fine on my stand alone mop3 player. It seems to be a compatibility issue or my adapter is bad.

Do I need a proprietary stereo cell phone headset in order to use it with the Voyager. A typical stereo has a 3 wire plug whereas the corded cell phone headset has 4 wires one for mic and has mute capabilities. Am I using the wrong setup here. The salesman told me I could use a standard set of stereo earbuds with an adapter plug......any help here would be greatly appreciated!!!

Look into bluetooth earphones.

Well that is definitely a great way to go but the most expensive.

Since I was hoping to use my existing high end earbuds for mp3 listening. That was the whole idea on getting the adapter. For now I am just trying to find out if regular corded stereo earbuds work for music listening with this phone. I called LG tech support and the guy there couldn't even tell me the answer.....so much for LG customer service...

I know verizon sells an adapter. Is this the one you got? If not, I bet the pins are wrong. The jack has 4 connectors unlike the standard 3 stereo connector. It is like this because it's made for a wired headset as well.

edit: that's pretty bad that support couldn't figure that out...

Thanks for that info. I suspected something like that. I know the regular cell phone headsets are 4 wire where a stereo only jack is 3 wire. I just figured the adapter used the first first 3 pins of the phone connector. Apparently that is not the case. It would seem I am the only one in the world trying to listen to mp3's on my cell phone with a standard set of stereo earbuds from the lack of information out there......lol

Ditto on the LG customer service comment. I spent like 20 minutes on the phone with him to no avail. Very frustrating to say the least.

I get what you are saying, but there are a number of Mobile Stereo Options, and the Bluetooth is not really all that expensive. I checked Buy.com and did a search on mobile stereo headset and found about 20 options. I'd post the link but I am still too junior here to have earned that right!
