Using Internet with Unlocked LG Voyager?... and other things

So, I'm not technologically stupid by any means, but as my first time getting a cell phone, my mom doesn't want to get me one unless it's prepaid.
I don't really understand much about the whole "unlocked" thing other than that it will keep me from using Verizon. If the phone is unlocked does it only enable me to use a different service or can I buy minutes as I go, like a prepaid phone?
Also, is it possible to use Internet with an unlocked Voyager, and if so, how would you be able to pay for that if you don't have a service plan.

Sorry, lots of questions, but I don't want to pay a lot and then not be able to use it.

You can't 'unlock' anything that's on Verizon.

Are you sure? I've never seen that anywhere...
So you can't use the Voyager with any other service besides Verizon?

EDIT:
OK, nevermind. I just read that it was CDMA and can't be unlocked.
So wy do people keep saying that they can be?

They are probably referring to it being "Hacked"
