The Two Hidden Service Menus of the LG Voyager

Greetings,

The LG Voyager VX10000 (VX10K) cell phone has two hidden service menus. They are provided so that Verizon employees and LG service techs can configure, test and troubleshoot the phone. This post lists the menus in version 11 of the LG Voyager firmware and how to access them so that you will be aware of the options available to an authorized Verizon or LG employee should your phone need service. That way you will be a fully informed user. I do NOT advocate that you use these menus yourself. In most cases, you may void your warranty and violate the Terms of Service (TOS) of your contract if you do.


ServicesLG menu
The first hidden menu seems to be intended primarily for LG employees and the FCC. It is accessed by opening your Voyager and typing ##lgservicemenu, pressing the "Send" button, and entering the Service Code 000000 when prompted. Here is what the menu contains:

I know very little about these menus so I won't be able to answer many questions. If you're like me, you will be troubled by the first menu. Notice the last item in the ServicesLG menu that I highlighted with red: it is a setting for key logging and its default setting seems to be "ON". Key logging is normally used when you want to capture the keystrokes that a user makes. Hackers and Crackers use tools like these to steal passwords and other sensitive information and it's why you need to protect a computer with antispyware software.

One legitimate reason for including a key logging feature would be to troubleshoot problems. A service tech or programmer could review what a beta tester did leading up to a problem. But why would it be turned "ON" by default for every user without their knowledge? I hope it is just a mistake and will be corrected. Version 12 of the LG Voyager firmware went into production in July of 2009 for new phones and an update for existing phones is now available on the internet. It will be interesting to see if it has key logging turned on by default also because the key logging setting was discovered by users many months before version 12 was released.

I've been learning about the second menu (Services). It is probably the most useful. Here are some of the things that can be done with it. I'll try to describe them in the future as I have time.

• Use the GPS test mode to obtain your latitude and longitude.
• Secure your Voyager so the passwords cannot be reset with *228 1.
• Prevent your Voyager from searching for the EV-DO (3G) network.
• Enable the modem function of your LG Voyager for tethered internet access by a PC.

Here are some definitions that may help you understand your LG Voyager and its Services menu a little better (in alphabetical order):

• CDMA = Code Division Multiple Access
• DNS = Domain Name Server (or System)
• DUN = Dial-Up Network
• EV-DO = EVolution-Data Optimized (or Only)
• GPS = Global Positioning System
• HDR = High Data Rate
• MDR = Minimum Data Rate
• MIP = Mobile Internet Protocol
• NAI = Network Access Identifier
• NAM = Number Assignment Module
• PCS = Personal Communication Services
• RTT = Radio Transmission Technology (1xRTT)
• SIP = Session Initiation Protocol
• SMS = Short Message Service
• WAP = Wireless Application Protocol

Finally, a note about the two frequency bands that the LG Voyager can use. The Voyger cell phone is designed to work with two different CDMA frequency bands: 800 MHz (megahertz) which is often referred to as the "cellular band" and 1.9 GHz (gigahertz) which is the PCS band. What many LG Voyager owners may not know is that EV-DO is a technology (Verizon's data network) and is not tied to any one frequency band. Verizon can provide EV-DO capability on either band, depending on the FCC licenses that it holds for a specific market. This means your phone may connect to the EV-DO network via 800 MHz in some regions of the U.S. and it may connect to EV-DO via 1.9 GHz in other regions of the U.S. Each frequency band has strengths and weaknesses. The lower-frequency 800 MHz band can penetrate farther into buildings, providing a usable signal more often than the higher-frequency 1.9 GHz band. However, the 1.9 GHz band can support higher data speeds. Unfortunately, if your location has lots of interference (you live near a military base) then your reception may act in unpredictable ways.

Why is this important to know? Answer: If you decided to go mucking about in the "3. Network Select" portion of the Services menu, you need to know what your local Verizon network is doing because the network settings may have a different effect depending on the particulars of your local area. Remember: Both the ServicesLG and Services menus are intended to be used only by trained employees of LG (during manufacturing and testing), the FCC (during certification) and Verizon (for product support).

Obtain your GPS coordinates on the Voyager

I have been researching for a Forum like this for some time now that has this kind of information on LG 11000 and I must say that this is the best one I have found yet. I have some questions that perhaps this forum and finally help me figure out. I have ported out my Verizon number to Metro PCS and I’m able to use the phone to send and receive callsand text messages. My plan with Metro PCS also includes the internet, navigation, and picture messaging but none of these features work on this phone since I have switched over to Metro. I also cant send long txt messages. Is it at all possible to get the navigation and the internet features to work on this phone while on Metro's service? Please help. Thanks in advance.
