To keep from killing it prematurely, your battery will last a lot longer if you keep it charged. Assuming it is a Lithium based battery, it is very important to keep it charged above a certain point. (also not to over charge it either, but your phone has automatic shutoff on the charger to prevent overcharging) If your battery voltage drops below a point, it will kill your battery. (even leaving a discharged battery on a shelf for a year might kill it as it does loose charge over time) My point, i charge my phones every night, but my other half likes to let hers discharge for days, until the phone dies, to my dismay. Her old phone's first battery died about 6 months into the phone and i was forking out more $$ to buy a new one. My old phone's battery has been going strong for almost 3 years. (although, it's starting to show it's age)
Take a look at the wikipedia article on li-po batteries. They quote an average of 500 discharge cycles, but i don't believe it. I bet it's higher for these newer li-po batteries.
