Alright, as you can see this is my first message. I just joined to help everyone else out with what I have been working with for the past few days jumping from new phone to phone. Here is all that I know about audio and ringtones on an LG phone (specifically LG VX8300)

    1. Mp3's

You want Mp3's on your phone? this is how you do it. First you will need to get a mini SD/SD card and a min SD/SD card jump-drive thingy (looks like a jump-drive that you plug the card into that plugs into the USB port) unless you have the card slot in your computer.

Next you will need to access the "secret" menu on your phone. Go to menu and type "0". then a screen comes up asking for a password. Type "000000" go down to the bottom of the list where it says Music Settings. Click it and hit enable mp3.

Now plug your card into your phone. take it out and plug it into your drive then into your computer. Now I have a Mac...so I use the easy drag and drop. I don't know about windows. You may need software. Now since the card was plugged into your phone, on your card you have a whole bunch of folders. One of these folders is now "My Mp3" You can now put mp3's in this folder and put the card back into your phone to play music. BUT WAIT. If you use iTunes you may have a problem. If you mp3 has Artwork attached to it, delete it. The phone will not play mp3's that have artwork attached to it. Why? I don't know.

    2. Ringtones

As you may or may not know, Bluetooth doesn't work for sending audio as it use to AND mp3's can't be used for ringtones. So here is how it works.

First you will need an audio editing program. There are a lot of freeware/shareware programs out there that will get the job done. I use Sound Studio but you can also use Acoustica, Audio Editor Plus as well as many others. I would check sites like Versiontracker.com for more.

Next you will need to pick a song and import it into the program. then pick a section NO BIGGER than 30 seconds. Use fade in or fade out to make it sound good. If you have a ****ty cell phone speaker like the razr you may want to put a low-pass or low-shelf filter to prevent the severe low end sounds from distorting the speaker. I don't know the exact frequency response of the cell phone speakers. I would then turn the track into a mono track rather then a stereo track. I would also make it 16 bit rather than 24 bit. Then export it. A lot of the trial programs only export in .WAV or .AIFF. Thats fine. Just bring the 30 second track back into iTunes and convert it to an mp3. I would make sure the bit rate is 64 kbps. (go to preferences, advanced, import, and change it to the low setting at 128 kbps since half of that meaning mono would be 64)

Now that you song is ready and should be below 200 KB (if not make sure it is, I tried using a song that was bigger and it wouldn't work) its time to send it. But before you do find you're mp3 (again I don't know how to in windows) and change the extension from something like this "sample.mp3" to this "sample.mid". All you need to do is change the last 2 characters. All this does is make the phone recognize it as a ringtone. NOW go into your e-mail and attach the mp3. Send it to your phone number @vzwpix.com with area code first. Thats 10 numbers. [email protected]. Hit send.

Now when you get the message your phone may say "Message Failed" or something like that. Don't sweat it. Go into your messages go to your inbox. Click the new message and it should retrieve it. You song will start to play. Go to options and click Save as Ringtone or something like that. Now you have a new ringtone you can use.

If you have any other questions I can try to answer them. It took me quite a while to figure all this out.

Oh, so I found something else out the other day. Go into your service menu and click the WAN Settings. Supposedly, but editing this (I haven't really looked into it yet) you can use your phone to get on the internet wirelessly for free. It wouldn't cost any money. My friend with a Razr was looking into it. The only thing is that it takes up minutes...I know this doesn't really fit with my previous post, but I didn't want to dig through all the posts to find where to post this.

It totally depends on the phone you got. I send MP3 ringtones just fine over Bluetooth with my LG Chocolate. If you have a data cable it's even easier as the phone's recognised as a flash drive and you can pretty much upload anything you like. It's just important to put your mp3's in your music folder, else you can't use them as ringtones.

You see whenever I put music into My Mp3 folder...they can only play as mp3's I can't make them ringtones. When I put the mp3 into My Sound OR My Music folders...the phone doesn't recognize anything being there. Thats why I found the only solution to be e-mailing the music.

Ok...every LG phone is different. Some of them you will be able to use bluetooth (the chocolate), some email (8000, 8100, 8300) and then some you won't be able to use either of these methods and will need to get a data cable (The V for one).

The best bet for loading music (mp3's) onto a newer LG is using a memory card and dragging and dropping the music from your computer to the card. The best way to load ringtones is using bitpim and a data cable. You won't need to worry about changing the extention's, and the size limit is no longer an issue (unless of course you run out of memory on the phone).

I and other's have posted this many, many times all over this forum.

Heres the thing. That whole data cable thing with bitpim. I don't think that'll work with a Macintosh computer. I got a data cable for my own phone and the carrier said it would work with any computer that has a USB drive...well I connected it to the computer and nothing came up. So pretty much, the e-mail way is the only way for a VX8300 to get music from a Macintosh?

I honestly don't know when it comes to a Mac...sorry.

I will look into it though and find out if bitpim is even supports a Mac. In the meantime, I would have to say that yes...email is the only way to get music to your phone.

One problem is going to be when you change phones/upgrade. Chances are, the phone won't support the email method....then what?

Ok....I went to bitpim's site, and as far as I know, it does support Mac's.

Here is the link if you'd like to download the latest version for the Mac.

    MacOS X 10.3+

Let me know how it goes for you, and if it worked or not....ok?

On a side note, when you got your data cable, it did come with a disk that had the drivers on it right, and you did load them onto your computer before you tried using bitpim?

The drivers for the data cable must be on your computer before even attempting to use bitpim.

dial this number quickly....#073887*....then the code is 000000. The mp3 section isn't there...because Razrs can already play mp3s. But there are other things you can mess around with.

and about the bitpin...thanks for the research but I probably wont be using. Since I don't have a data cable and find the e-mail to be good enough. But if I manage to find the drivers somewhere i may give it a whirl.

Re: Audio/Ringtone Help For LG Users

So...I downloaded a ringtone to my phone, and I see it, it plays, I set it as the ringer for all my voice calls and that worked out fine. However, I cannot set it as the ringer for my text messaging for some reason. The only ringers I can have for texting is the default, pre-packaged ringers, and they are awful. I cannot figure out how to set the downloaded one as the ringer for texting.

It is a legitimately bought one from Telus too, it isn't one I converted and tried to transfer over.

My phone is an LG 8100.

Any help on how I could set this ringtone as my texting ringtone would be MUCH appreciated, thank you.

    Hi

For some completely unknown reason they did not include this functionality into these phones, which is a bummer to me. Same with your alarm tones...

I can use my ringtones for ringtones and alarm clock, but yeah it doesn't work for text messaging. I just stick to the most simple factory ringtone. Sorry I can't be more helpful.
