LG6190 Trouble getting custom downloaded ringtones to work

I have an LG6190, USB data cable and am using Bitpim to download to the phone. When I download the file (tried MP3, wav and mid files) it shows up on the phone as a blank spot (no name) and sounds like a regular ringer, no music at all. Any ideas on what's happening? Thanks.
