1. Download Audacity
Audacity: Free Audio Editor and Recorder
2. Download and install lamenc.dll as instructed on Audacity's help pages
Audacity: How do I download and install the LAME MP3 encoder?
3. Edit any mp3 file down to 30 seconds (or whatever you like) and export as an mp3 file. Use Edit-->Preferences-->File Formats to set the bitrate to whatever you would like. Higher bitrates mean larger files, but if you're using a 2GB microSD card in the phone, what's to worry about.
If you use BitPim to load ringtones, you will find the correct directory structure under /mmc1 It is not recommended to use BitPim to copy music files to your Music folder on the microSD card. It is much too slow.
4. Download and install BitPim.
Welcome to BitPim The following is from BitPim's Help File for the 8600:
1. On the microSD card, create a subdir called ringers
2. Copy your ringtone files to the ringers subdir.
3. Insert the card back into the phone and start BitPim.
4. Retrieve Ringtone data from the phone:
a. Menu Data -> Get Phone Data.
b. Check on Ringtone, and click on OK.
5. Write Ringtone data back to the phone:
a. Menu Data -> Send Phone Data.
b. Check on Ringtone and Replace All, and click on OK.
6. All of the ringtones stored on both the phone and the card are now available for assignment.
Step 3 through 5 should be repeated for all changes made to the ringers subdir.
Ringtones stored on the microSD card will not show up in the Ringers tab, since BitPim does not add or delete those files.

Hope that Helps!
