LG VX8600 charger problems

my phone is getting pretty old now and i was about to retire it when all of a sudden when i plug in the charger to it, the phone shuts off and wont even charge? its confusing i have no idea whats going on it just started happening this morning and has been going on all day and i NEED to have my phone but it wont charge. does anyone have any suggestions on what i should do?

I would check the contacts from the battery to the phone. Maybe they're dirty?
