Newb question.. does a cell phone need service to receive a call?

Just like the title says.. Does a cell phone need service to receive a call? My friend said he called me last night, and the cell was right by my window sill. But ive received calls there before, maybe he didn't have service?

As far as I know you need a service to place a call, unless otherwise you cal 911 is an exception.

well yeah, i think i had service when i made the call, but im not sure.

but do you need service to receive calls? pretty sure it would just goto voicemail if you didnt have service.

If your cell phone is out of a cell phone service area, you will still get the call...at a later date as it will go directly to your voice mail, and then as soon as you get into an area that does have service, you will receive your call.
