This depends highly on if you are getting 3g service in your area. If the phone does not detect it then it will default to 1x.

MetroPCS never used to have 3G. They went from 1X to 4G in some areas. I do remember hearing that they've upgraded to 3G, but I'm not sure if it is in all areas. You can try dialing *228 to reactivate the phone and update to the latest PRL.
