They sure do require a data plan. I ordered it today and I had to choose a data plan.

I know Verizon has their official line that you have to buy the $30 unlimited data plan, but has anyone tried turning the data plan off and just using the wi-fi feature? I know you would lose the access to downloading new apps, but if I had another phone, couldn't I transfer the apps to my wife's phone that she wants?

Trust me, you wouldn't want to do this. The WiFi on this phone sucks (at best). Lot's of problems with it.

I have had no problems with my WiFi on my DROID, maybe you should try using a different router (I have 5 different ones that I use).

My wifi works great as well. But yes the phone is designed to work with a 3g data plan (but if you pay the full price for one I suppose you could just do the wifi and do updates from the computer.
