I'm sure there's a lot of you that have your contacts already synced with MS Outlook 2007 and need to get them to your new Droid. Here's an easy way to do it:
Step 1
- Open Outlook and click on your contacts
- Go to File > Import and Export > Select Export to a file - Next
- Select Comma Separated Values (Windows) - Next
- Select Contacts - Next
- Save the file in a known location - Next
- Click on 'Map Custom Fields' and make sure Default Maps are set
- Click Finish
Step 2
- Log Into your Gmail account
- Click Contacts in the left menu
- Click Import in the top right
- Choose file and select the .csv file you just saved (add them to a group if you want)
- Click Import
- Your contacts will be imported into your Gmail account
Step 3
- On your Droid make sure you have connected your Gmail account
- Go to contacts > Menu > Accounts
- Select your Gmail account > Menu > Sync Now
- Your new contacts will be imported - Any duplicates should be merged.

Re: Export Contacts from Outlook and Import to Motorola Droid (Android 2.0)
Freaking awesome and so easy tutorial. I have all of my contacts in gmail in like 3 minutes flat from start to finish. Thanks and now I can go get my Droid this week.
Is there a way to sync calendar and emails though? There seems to be a lot of discussion and not many accurate answers. Thanks again.

Here's how to sync the calendar:

For the e-mail you'd have to hook up your exchange or pop e-mail to the phone.

Great, but this does not help me import the contacts straight into the phone. The Droid actually allows you to import contacts through vCards.

Re: Export Contacts from Outlook and Import to Motorola Droid (Android 2.0)
John,
These were great instructions and all my contacts synced over perfectly. Do I simply do the same thing again if I edit one of my contacts in outlook or wilI I get a duplicate contact on my gmail? I have also edited contacts on my Droid. What will happen if I import them back into outlook?
Thanks
Mark

Re: Export Contacts from Outlook and Import to Motorola Droid (Android 2.0)
I just got my Moto Droid last week and i think the sync ability sucks.
Why do I need to import and export data, why do I need to load sync'ing s/w.
I need the ability to take my contacts and calender from outlook and load them on my new phone.
This should happen when i plug my usb cable in, end of story.
The s/w is out of date, all my moto phones have sync'd for the last 5 years, as well as my HTC's.
Am I missing something here or did we go backward ?

Re: Export Contacts from Outlook and Import to Motorola Droid (Android 2.0)
You didn't miss anything here jcather. This is my issue as well. Even the HTC Eris has the HTC sync which will allow you to sync with outlook. I did install googlesync yesterday to play with it and see how well it works with syncing to my outlook calendar. Surprisingly, it does quite well. I told it to update every 30 minutes and "bam" every 30 minutes, all changes in my outlook calendar were there in the google calendar. I may have to venture down the Moto Droid road if the HTC Passion/Dragon doesn't come out within the next 30 days or so. I'll keep you posted.

Re: Export Contacts from Outlook and Import to Motorola Droid (Android 2.0)
I have semi-successfully linked but noticed that email in the CSV file titled "EmailAddress" inserts some code not the actual address for each contact from Outlook. The actual address ends up in the "Notes" within Gmail after syncing. I tried to change the title of the field within the CSV file but could not successfully get it to populate the actual Email field in Gmail. Does anyone know what Google's code is looking for when it sync's the CSV file, IE: fname = first name, etc. I am quite sure it is simply naming it properly so Gmail recognizes it, or maybe not. HELP!
