Is it possible to download google maps directions via wi-fi and then leave if you opt out of the data plan? Most of the places I go have wi-fi...

Re: Motorola Droid Review
I believe if you're connected to wi-fi when you punch in the route it will download necessary data for the trip via the wi-fi connection. Pretty sure you can't not get a data plan with this phone though. It's not an env touch.

Re: Motorola Droid Review
NO.
It is a data intensive phone.
If you're not intending on browsing the world wide web, DO NOT get this phone.
Because this and most other android devices are constantly connected to the internet (for things like widgets) the phone NEEDS a data plan. Verizon requires one.

Re: Motorola Droid Review
I do intend on browsing the net. I just have wi-fi everywhere I go so the only time it would really be a handicap to not have the 3g is if I were driving. I think we all know that the internet and driving don't mix very well. And so what if my widgets don't update while I'm out of wi-fi? It's not really crucial I know the exact up to date temperature and stock price.

Re: Motorola Droid Navigation Data
I did a little research behind Verizon's philosophy in requiring customers to maintain a data plan of $29.99/month.
After many contacts with the Verizon higher ups, my own personal experiences, and other research...I have found the following:
Only 16% of Verizon's customers have access to Wi-Fi networks all the time.
Without a data plan, data charges from accidental browsing would be extremely expensive. This increases call volume to customer service and also increases the amount of money you throw away to Verizon. The charge you would incur without a data plan (if Verizon allowed this) would be $0.002 per KB. About 1 word is equal to a KB...just one page could total $5. You then contact Verizon, want to backdate your plan (which can't be done once you already see the charge on a bill) and then you almost want to dump Verizon.
The widgets on the DROID and other smartphones will not "automatically" disconnect from the network when you leave Wi-Fi unless the particular device has a way to disable the wireless data network altogether, so your philosophy of not having the widgets update wouldn't work and you'd still be charged for data.
95% of customers who have a data plan benefit from it in some way. This means that only 5% of the customers that have it aren't satisfied. This means Verizon is making $29.99 per month whether you use it or not and they're happy with that too.
Carriers like Sprint and T-Mobile who do not require customers to have a data plan strongly suggest one when activating a smartphone/PDA. 90% of customers who activate a PDA or Smartphone with one of these carriers WILLINGLY add a data plan.
Remember, you speak for ONE customer and Verizon has 80 Million.
