So does the Android OS work with Outlook or do they use a totally different program to sync with. I only have bought Windows Smartphones (have Sammy Omnia now) and I always have used Outlook 2007.
I know nothing about the Android OS but from the posts and what I have read it looks promising. I know this is a really, really stupid question (so don't beat me up too bad) but I have two programs Illium Ewallet and Listpro for Windows Mobile. I'm pretty sure they would not work on the Droid. I have been told by Verizon that there are so many free and beta apps that I can totally customize the Droid and probably find programs that match and/or are better than the Illium programs I have. I would say I'm fairly tech savy (I can build my own computers and do all my own tech support but messing with phones scares me a little). So if the Android OS is so customizable and easy to learn how that may be my best bet for a new phone.
I'm also contemplating the BlackBerry Storm2 vs the Droid but that is a whole other thread/disscussion. Just not sure what to do at this point until I learn more about these different OS's and if I will like them.

Re: Motorola Droid Sync with outlook?

It doesn't exactly sync with outlook but you can sync your calendar, import your contacts and read your mail (by hooking up pop or exchange accounts) without too much hastle.

No - your programs for WM def wouldn't work on Android, but there may be something similar available in the Android Market.

I have a BB Storm 2 here as well, and did a review on it Two completely different phones. Let me know if you have any questions on them.

I am in virtually the same position. As for eWallet check out Android Password Manager - SplashID ($30). The deal breaker for me is the lack of sync for Outlook contacts. Importing your contacts to GMail is easy but not a viable procedure for updating contacts on a regular basis - it is clearly not user friendly. I need two way SYNC. I have tried a few after market products for syncing Outlook and Gmail and found them unreliable. Some contacts sync and others don't and sometimes I end up with duplicates. I have put hours into this and Windows Mobile Center is easy and quick. At this point I have given up on sync project for contacts.

Re: Motorola Droid Sync with outlook?

I guess Google figured the only people that would need to sync their contacts on a daily basis are business oriented people. There's a Google app called "Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook", but it is only available to Gmail business clients. https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gappssync

If you're stuck in Gmail <--> Outlook purgatory (no business account, but still need to sync) then you'll likely have to pay for a program to regularly sync your contacts. But, if you're like ::insert likely high percentage:: then the above methods will suit your needs.

Re: Motorola Droid Sync with outlook?

Since my last posting, I have been in contact with a Level 2 Verizon technical support person. They assure me that a full Outlook sync is possible with a USB cable and the provided software. However, they caution that should you opt to use this that you should NOT do the wireless sync to GMail for the same info. They say there is no ability to set a heirarchy and this dual sync would result in a mess! Think I might have to give the Droid a try after all...

    UPDATE:
I called Verizon back to inquire about included software. The rep said there is no software included with the phone. I then asked him about cable sync with Outlook and he said that was not possible except through Microsoft Exchange (I am not interested in installing this). Guess I am back to relying on the 30 day exchange policy to find out if the Droid is a viable solution for me.

Best of luck to all of you.

I've been syncing my outlook contacts and calendar to igoogle for a few months now. Am I to understand that I should use one or the other to sync with the droid but not both? I don't really need to sync more than once a day so connecting by usb cable wouldn't be a hassle.

Did the 2nd level give you any steps on how to do the sync with outlook directly? I have talked with Motrorola, Google, and Verizon and they all tell me it can't be done.

Re: Motorola Droid Sync with outlook?

I just need to know how to sync Outlook contacts to GMail once. Then I'm planning on using Gmail from here on out.
Any chance that my calendar would sync as well??? I will keep looking for an answer and if I find it I will let you all know or if you so hopefully you will share.
Thanks for all the input and all your help.
    Nancy

Here I found this on this forum. I just did it and it worked great. Here is the link. They did a great job explaining them.

    http://cellphoneforums.net/motorola-...oid-2-0-a.html

Now are you guys saying that you can't sync from the phone to Gmail and Gmail to the phone. It only is one way?? Maybe I miss understood. I sometime put new contacts in my phone and then sometimes I would put them in Gmail. So will it stay updated no matter which way I put it in? I'm trying to find a book on Google (just got one from the library today) so I can learn how to do all this. Thanks for all your help.

Nancy, the phone itself sync's with Gmail both ways as long as you have sync enabled on the phone (the calendar, email, and contacts). No need for books

Re: Motorola Droid Sync with outlook?

Alright, for those of you that are Googling like insane people because you just bought the Droid, here's a summary to save the the effort that I've made over the past three days.

There is no way to Sync your phone to your Outlook WITHOUT going through the Google cloud, resulting in all of your information remaining on Google's servers (if posters on different sites are to be believed, that information will remain for as long as 18 months after you delete it, as per Google's privacy policy).

So what's a Droid owner to do? My information is private enough that I don't want it all out on somebody else's server. This phone rocks. This is a problem.

Here's your answer. There are at least three products currently under development which claim they will successfully sync your Outlook information to the Droid (including a lot of stuff like Notes that Gmail doesn't do). "Under Development" appears to mean within 30 days or so--at least one of them reports that they'll be releasing on December 1st.

My personal choice has been to keep the phone, carry my old smartphone for a one month transition, and the first software manufacturer that releases a suitable product will have my business. the $30 or so I expect to pay is well worth having this great phone.

For those of you that want to see what I'm talking about, here are the manufacturers:

CompanionLink currently has sync through Google, but is developing direct syncing :
    Google Android sync

The Missing Sync looks like it will do EVERYTHING, and already exists on other platforms: Keep your life in sync with The Missing Sync for Android from Mark/Space

MyLink for Android purports to be released on Dec. 1, and it looks like it should do the trick as well: Wave Global Services UK Limited

If you're aggravated by this like I am, please e-mail the companies and tell 'em you're interested...I e-mailed all three and told them that if they released first, they've sold to me--I would hope (although I'm probably wrong) that a little bit of feedback from potential customers might speed things along a little bit.

If I'm missing anything please let me know, 'cause I want to fully use this thing TODAY!

I tried Companion Link. It was a mess for me. I was able to resolve duplicates but it took a lot of clean up and careful selection of settings. However, I had to start with a clean slate in Google contacts (to avoid duplicates) and then Companion Link did not bring all my contacts over to GMail. There may be a solution but after much invested time, I gave up.

Re: Motorola Droid Sync with outlook?

So now I'm confused. I had looked forward to puying a Droid as an UPGRADE to my Blackberry, but synching my calendar and address book with Outlook is difficult, at best?

Apparently, I have to get a gmail account? I have my own email provider and domain name - I don't want gmail. Am I understanding this correctly?

Did the developers take a giant leap backwards?

Re: Motorola Droid Sync with outlook?

I am a little confused. I like the Droid, but like others need my Outlook.

The number 1 issue for me is to use catagories and if at all possible to use colors for each catagory. Will any of the programs under development do this? If so which one?

Is there any apps that are out there that will allow me to add catagories?

When I exported my contacts to G-mail, they were listed by first name and I manually had to go to over 500 contacts and change first and last names and had to drop Dr for doctors. I hope never to do this again.

I also do not want the changes I made to corrupt my Outlook contacts. I also noticed the Droid duplicating events on my Outlook calendar.

    Any suggestions?

Re: Motorola Droid Sync with outlook?

I've been using gSynchit for a couple of weeks. It's a small program that installs and integrates into Outlook, and automatically synchs Outlook contacts and calendar events with my gmail account, both directions. My gmail account then is set up to also pull in (via POP) my work email. So even though I'm technically using gmail and the cloud to synch, it's all seamless. I don't have any paranoia around having my data in the cloud, and in fact I take great comfort knowing that at any time, I have a full backup and access to all my contacts, calendar, and emails from any computer via the gmail account. That said, I don't ever log into that gmail account directly, I really just use it as a conduit between Outlook on my PC, and my Droid.

FYI, I'm not using MS Exchange. If I was, I think there would be other, perhaps better options. But this (gSynchit) appears to be working well.

Re: Motorola Droid Sync with outlook?

RandyB - thanks for your info. That may finally get me past the deal-killer for getting a Droid. Couple of questions, however -

Are all of your mail, calendar and contacts resident on your PC, and are your contacts and calendar always resident on you Droid? I don't mind my data being out in the cloud, but I need to have access to it when I'm not connected.

do you have a private domain name, or do you use a "@gmail" address? Do you have some higher level of gmail service other than just the basic freebie service?

    thanks
    John
