Google Adds 'Search Near Me Now' To Smartphones
by Nick Saint | Jan. 7, 2010 http://www.businessinsider.com
Google has announced Near Me Now, a new feature on its home page on iPhones and Android phones.
Google will now automatically keep track of your location through your phone's GPS, allowing you to search for information about your immediate surroundings without entering any text, by clicking on a link that will appear automatically.
This is one of the first mobile tools we've seen that might actually lead to a big advertising opportunity (mobile ads are otherwise grossly over-hyped). It's easy to imagine restaurants and other local businesses ponying up to appear in these searches.
The announcement comes with this video demo of the new service
