No pictures on some emails

When receiving emails, most of the pictures I receive don't show up. All I get is the outline of where the picture should be with a blue box with a ? in the middle. Is there some setting that needs to be changed or is it a idiosyncrasy of the phone itself or none of the above???
Anybody have any ideas?

Which e-mail? Gmail?

I use gmail primarily, also k9 and regular. I think the problem lies in deeply embedded pictures that have been forwarded numerous times. As I stated, it doesn't happen every time.

The same thing happens to me. Although recently, for some e-mails it is starting to include missing pictures on the bottom of the message as attachments.

This only happens in the G-Mail app. Not with GMail in the browser on the web.
