Motorola recently released 3 new smart phones in the Motorola Droid series of smart phones, the Motorola Droid MAXX, Motorola Droid Ultra and Motorola Droid Mini. But, what I’m going to be comparing here is whether Motorola really needed to release both the Motorola Droid Ultra and Motorola Droid MAXX. Are the smart phones that different? Did Motorola really need to release two separate smart phones? Let’s find out...

Size and weight

The Droid MAXX measures 137.5 x 71.2 x 8.5 mm which is quite decent for a smart phone with a 5.0” touch screen. But the Droid Ultra measures 137.5 x 71.2 x 7.18 mm and has a 5.0” touch screen as well. So you could say the Droid Ultra is Motorola’s statement that they too can make a super thin smart phone. As far as weight is concerned, the Droid MAXX weighs 167 g while the Droid Ultra weighs 137 g. So the Droid Ultra is a much lighter smart phone as well.

The Droid Ultra clearly picks up this point as it is thinner and lighter.

Display

There is nothing to separate both these smart phones as far as the display is concerned. Both smart phones come with a 5.0” AMOLED touch screen and have a maximum resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels. Both smart phones have a capacitive touch screen and also have a pixel density of 294 ppi. Both smart phones also come with a light sensor and proximity sensor. No matter which of these smart phones you buy. As far as the display is concerned, you will be purchasing exactly the same smart phone.

This point is a draw.

Memory & Storage

As far as memory and storage is concerned, there is only one major difference. But first, the similarities. Both smart phones come with 2 GB of RAM and can give you some pretty impressive operating speeds. Unfortunately, both smart phones lack expandable storage options which means you have to be happy with the internal storage on each smart phone. This leads me to the difference between both smart phones. While the Droid MAXX comes with 32 GB of internal storage, the Droid Ultra comes with 16 GB of internal storage.

There isn’t too much in this point but I will still have to award the point to the Droid MAXX because it offers more storage than the Droid Ultra.

Camera

Like with the display point, the cameras on both these smart phones are exactly the same as well. Both smart phones come with a 10 MP camera and LED flash on the back while the front camera is a solid 2 MP shooter. Both smart phones allow video recording at full HD through the front camera and as far as the rear camera is concerned, both smart phones allow full HD video recording at 60 fps which is the next generation of video recording among smart phones. Unfortunately, both cameras lack any real features (except for auto focus) and this is a major let down. Both cameras are pretty decent, but I don’t see either threatening other smart phone cameras simply because of the lack of any worthwhile features.

This point is going to be a draw.

OS & Performance

You can break your head searching for any signs of difference between both these smart phones as far as the operating system and performance hardware is concerned but you will find nothing. That’s because both smart phones are exactly the same. Both smart phones run on Android 4.2.2 (JellyBean) operating system. Both smart phones run on the Motorola X8 chip which is Motorola’s take on the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro and a dual core, 1700 MHz processor. Both smart phones also come with 400 MHz, quad core graphics processors.

So you see, these smart phones are exactly the same and therefore this point’s a draw.

Battery

I guess the battery is the main reason why the Droid MAXX is called so. It comes with a huge 3,500 mAh battery as opposed to the Droid Ultra that comes with a 2,130 mAh battery. And while the Droid Ultra has a standby time of 13 days, the Droid MAXX has a standby time of 25 days. So, you almost get an extra couple of weeks of standby time on the Droid MAXX and that definitely is a good enough reason to pick it over the Droid Ultra.

This point goes to the Droid MAXX.

Price

If you want to purchase the Droid MAXX (free of contract) you will have to pay $ 650 while you will have to pay $ 600 for the Droid Ultra (free of contract). Is a $ 50 price difference warranted for two smart phones that are essentially the same? Well, you are paying the extra money for a larger storage capacity and longer battery life. I think it is pretty much worth it.

Both smart phones provide just as much value for money and that’s why this point is going to be a draw.

Conclusion

So, the final score here reads 2 points to 1 in favor of the Motorola Droid MAXX. So, why would anyone go with the Motorola Droid Ultra? Well, it’s $ 50 cheaper for one. It is also thinner and lighter. Basically, if you don’t care too much for the extra storage and are satisfied charging your smart phone on a regular basis, you can pick up the lighter, thinner and cheaper Motorola Droid Ultra and enjoy almost everything you would have got from the Motorola Droid MAXX. Which one would you choose?
