    Hi guys,

I live in SoCal. Just bought my first cell ever--a black RAZR with Cingular service. Love the phone but the screen consistently fades to clack every few seconds when it's on. Needless to say this is very annoying! Not even disabling the screen saver fixes the issue.

Is anyone else familiar with this problem, and are there any known fixes (that can be performed by a cell newbie such as myself)? Does the silver RAZR have this problem? I vastly prefer the black ver the silver and would hate to have to send this phone back, but I can't keep a phone if the screen won't stay lit for more than a few seconds at a time.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Edit: I searched for this problem on the forums before posting and didn't find it; apologies if I missed the thread.

I don't think it's a glitch my v330 does the same thing where as my v300 did not and I haven't been able to find a reason or a fix as of yet. I think it does it to save on battery life and maybe changeing the power saving features might stop it.

when you say every few seconds how many exactly?

the screen saver feature it's just to set the time for whatever image you have selected to appear after the phone goes into standby mode, setting it to off nothing will display after it goes into standby

go into into your settings menu > initial set up > backlight > set to 60 ( 1 min)

let me know if that worked for you...

Yes and no! I was confusing "timeout" with "backlight", and I had backlight set to 20 seconds, so thanks for clarifying my confusion of the terminology. However, on my RAZR there are no options for 60 secs--it's only 5, 10, or 20 secs. Do you know of any way I can resolve this? I really appreciate your help.

Okay, a co-worker just said I might have to flash the ROM to get the option to kep the backlight on for 60 secs, which I only vaguely understand and have no idea how to actually go about doing...

they only give you 20 seconds max!? wow, i'm keeping my silver one...

did you try changing your display settings to 2 minutes or did they give you less time on that also?

On my phone it says Display Timeout, and yes, I changed that to 2 min. but the result is still the same.

Update: I called Motorola about the problem and the CSR told me that the phone's backlight time cannot be changed. Now I'm kind of bummed out...why would a more expensive version of the same phone come with less functionality? Might have to go ahead and exchange it for the silver.

i could have told you that...

i do agree with you that Motorola should have left things the same or if anything they should leave it up to the user to set how long they want their display to be on...good luck Doug.

LOL! Yeah, I'm, sure you could have, but I had to try anyway. I wonder if, like some computer firmware issues, there's a way to do it but they don't to tell you for fear of contributing to the problem? I don't know...at any rate, I'll fiddle with the phone for a week or two and exchange it for the silver if the backlight thing gets to be too much. Thanks for your help, Tony!

you can change backlight timeout options with seem edits. You can even set it to always on.

the following provided by the great xlr8

    SEEM 0032_0001 edits:

    bits: 00000000 <-- binary
    76543210 <-- bit #

    **all offsets are HEX**

    offset 80 - bit 6: Settings > Initial Setup > Backlight length options (1 for 20/40/60 seconds, 0 for 5/10/20 seconds)

    offset 75 - bit 5: Settings > Initial Setup > Display Timeout > 5 and 10 minutes (0 on, 1 off)

offset 1D - bit 0: External LCD Backlight (1 always on when flip closed, 0 on briefly when flip closed)

    offset 0A - bit 7: Settings > Initial Setup > Backlight > Continuous option (1 on, 0 off)

    What does this all mean?

My Black v3's limit is also 20 seconds. I never knew there was a big difference between the black and silver, besides color.
