I'm new to the whole cell phone thing. Should I always leave my phone on? I wouldn't be using it most of the day (at work or at night while asleep). Is it bad to turn the phone on and off often? Is it better to leave it on all the time?

Cell phones are designed to be on all the time so there is no harm in leaving it on, my Razr is always on. But if you want to save a bit of battery life there is also no harm in turning it off at night.

sdsurfer, is that a trick question? On similar lines, do you leave your computer on all day and night? Is your life or business so busy that you need to be available or reachable with your cell phone 24/7, then yes, leave it on all the time.
As for battery life, I dont think that matters, if you play a game on the phone for 15 minutes, that uses more power than when it remains idle for hours. You may have seen the specs that talk time is 3 hrs but standby is like 10 days.

If you have a Bluetooth phone, it's better to turn off the Bluetooth function when you're not using it.

Thanks. I do have a bluetooth phone and have left the option on even when not in use. I wrote Motorola and this is what they said:
"Regarding your concern, we may inform you that the leaving your RAZR V3 cellular phone continuously on will not affect the battery memory. However it will affect the battery performance, since the Standard 680 mAh Li-ion Battery that comes with the RAZR V3 phone, provides up to 180 to 290 hours of Standby Time."

The comment about Bluetooth is an issue of security, not battery life. IMHO, security concerns are probably overblown, but there's no reason to leave your Bluetooth phone on the "discoverable" setting if you aren't using the Bluetooth functionality.
See: http://www.bluetooth.com/help/security.asp
As for whether or not to leave the *phone* on... sure, why not. Just switch it to vibrate mode when you're at the movies.

I have been told by moto and cingular reps that these razrs need to be powered down once a day for a few minutes, preferably during the afternoon so it may recieve any updates...
I have noticed mine does seem to work better since I have started doing this.......

Cingular doesn't do OTA updates unless you request it.

Powering off and on your phone is like rebooting your PC, it resets the software on your Phone, that's why sometimes Motorola recommends doing this when your phone freezes.
As far as batteries go, here's a good place to read about how to properly charge your battery >> Battery Univeristy
