Will this plan work for a free Razr?

Okay, I have thought about this plan a lot, and want to know if you all think it will work.

Though amazon.com I can get a razr for free, but it comes with a phone number on the SIM card that I have to keep activated for a year as part of the rebate.
My mother is looking for a new cell, so I am going to get one though Cingular, and sign a 2 year contact. Then I will take out the SIM card in the new Cingular phone, and in its place put in the SIM that came with the Razr, thus keeping that account alive. I will then put a new SIM card in the Razr, and activate it with my old number.

Make sense?

I guess I'm a little confused - what does that buy you? Why not just take the phone and number Amazon gives you and use that?

What exactly are you trying to accomplish (other than the free phone)?

I am trying to keep my current phone number, and the free phone.

Ah - it sounded to me like both you and your mother were getting new phones and for some reason switching the numbers.

What you should be able to do them (assuming you have a Cingular GSM plan currently), is have your mother sign up for the phone from Amazon and then take both phones into a Cingular rep and have them swap the numbers for you. I don't know enough about them to know if swapping the sim card will change the phone number or not.

Look around the web - I've seen a couple of places that say they can do a number transfer and give you a free phone with new activation. Unfortunately I'm already with Cingular, so can't take advantage of that .

Also, I've heard that there are some new Cigular incentives coming out on the 21st, and that the current price on the Razr is good through labor day - I'm kinda hoping that the price will come down in the next month.
