whenever I hold the phone up to my ear, I can hear a faint high pitch whine...

I do not have to be on a call at all

when I dail out, I cannot hear it but when I receive calls, I can...weird

sounds kind of like when you have your head behind a tv set and you hear that high pitch... I have no other way to explain it.

    any ideas?

I've had my Razr for a week (T-Mobile) bought from Amazon. I'm getting the same problem. Here are my symptoms:

    1) When the phone is not making a call and the flip is open, I will hear a high pitch hum.

    2) When I receive an in-coming call, the high pitch hum is also there.

    3) When I make an out-going call, the high pitch hum is gone.

    4) While making the out-going call with no high pitch hum, if I switch over to speakerphone, then back to non-speakerphone mode, the hum will re-appear during the conversation.

I did some research online, and found a whole host of people are having the same problems we are. Check out this link. You are not alone my friend. If you read the thread all the way through, the reason why we're having that high pitch hum is revealed.

    --------------------------------------

Amazon is only giving me 2 options. Either return the phone for a replacement, OR return it and get a full refund. Although I have 3 weeks to return the phone to Amazon, I don't want to go through all the headaches involved regarding my rebates and my T-Mobile contract (I purchased 2 phones from Amazon, and jumped on a family plan.)

Anyways, I'm cutting my losses (which is more of a gain really, because I only paid $125 for the Razr, and the rebate is for $150). I'm gonna sell this phone on Ebay for around $250 and get myself the Motorola V635. It's got bluetooth, speakerphone, expandable memory up to 256MB via transflash, a mega pixel camera with flash, AND a built-in MP3 player.

This phone isn't available yet through any of the big GSM Providers (T-Mobile, Cingular, etc.), but I just bought an UNLOCKED version of it from Ebay about 2 hours ago. I paid roughly $250 for a packaged deal including car charger, data cable, leather case, and hands-free headset. I also bought a new SanDisk 256MB transflash memory card with SD adapter from another Ebay seller for $40 bucks too. And I paid another $10 dollars for stereo headphones (2.5mm jack) with built-in mic so I can listen to my MP3's and answer in-coming calls with the same head unit. $300 bucks in all...

It should all arrive in a week, and I'm going to be so happy to get rid of this RAZR. The Motorola V635 is a REAL TOY. Now I have to spend about 12 hours reading up on flash and firmware and flex and stuff -- I'm a complete noob to phone modding. After 2 hours so far, I still don't grasp the general concept of "flashing"... ugh... more reading...

The RAZR is getting so many positive reviews, that I doubt all of them have this problem. If you're patient and you love the RAZR, I would have T-Mobile keep sending you a new one until you have one that is problem-free.

Assuming T-mobile sends you out a new phone with an advance-replacement policy, it shouldn't be too much of an inconvenience for you. You'll always have a phone in-hand. Just be sure to store all your contact information on your SIM CARD, and refrain from downloading any games/applications/wallpapers/ringtones into the RAZR until you finally get a phone that is problem-free.

Also, if you return the phone to T-Mobile without the battery, you'll have a 90% percent chance that they won't make an issue out of it. The T-mobile return department is only concerned about the actual "hand-set" and not accessories. Oddly enough, the battery is considered an accessory. It's almost the same unmentioned policy that Dell has in regards to returning monitors and computers without their cables. I've accumulated massive amounts of various connection cables through Dell when I kept returning their defective products and keeping their cables.

Anyways, it's worth a shot. Worst comes to worst, they'll ask you to mail the battery back and you can always say you "forgot" to include the battery in the return package. But if you do get to keep the battery, it's good compensation for all the trouble you're going through. Two or three extra batteries are definitely alright with me!

By the way, if you decide to keep that hands-free headset that came with the RAZR, I'm 99% positive T-Mobile won't make an issue out of it.
