I was supplied a Blackberry Pearl 8100 by my employer. The phone is used as a phone only (no e-mail) and as such I detest it. The Blackberry uses T-Mobile. I have an active personal account using a Motorola Razr V3 on Verizon that I no longer use.
I have a few questions: is it possible to reconfigure the Razr so that I can use it in place of the Blackberry (I need to keep the business phone number)? If not, can I purchase on of those unlocked phones, preferably something inexpensive (don't need or want a lot of features) and have it activated so that I can use the same number? Do I need to use the SIM card from the Blackberry?
I have not stayed current on phone technology and if someone could help steer me straight I would be most appreciative

    Re: Help

Verizon Wireless uses CDMA, which is incompatible to T-Mobile's GSM network, so the RAZR won't work with T-Mobile.

It is possible to get another phone that is GSM (meaning it has a SIM Card) and use it on that line, given the employer has no Blackberry specific plan on the line. You can use any unlocked GSM device with your phone. As a benefit, you can use any T-Mobile phone (unlocked or not) with their SIM Card and their number.

I hope this helped. If not, feel free to post back!

No. Your Verizon Wireless RAZR is a CDMA device and T-Mobile is a GSM carrier. These two technologies (CDMA and GSM) are different and incompatible. Moreover, the VZW phone has no SIM slot, so even if they were compatible you'd have no place to put the SIM card.

Any unlocked GSM phone that supports 850MHz and 1900MHz bands will work on T-Mobile. Although T-Mobile's native GSM network is exclusively 1900MHz, except for a small portion they purchased from Suncom, they use the 850MHz for roaming, and you simply never know if or when you might need to roam. That said, as long as the unlocked phone supporst GSM 1900MHz and preferably 850MHz as well, you can just take the SIM from the Blackberry and put it in the unlocked phone and you are good to go.

I think you meant CDMA for Verizon Wireless.

I am not sure which question you're answering. I say this because the OP asked a two part question and one answer depends on the other.
