I apologize if this is old news, but I was just playing around with it today and I figured out a way to download free midi's found on the web to my phone, and I thought I'd share it.
You need a webhost (aol or geocities should do ok), and ftp client, a midi file (ringtone) that you want on your phone and a text editor, not to mention internet access on your phone.
I tested this on my T721 with ATT wireless mMode service and it worked perfect, so if you'd like to give it a shot feel free.
The instructions are on my weblog
Again, sorry if this is old news, I just thought I'd share in case it wasn't.

Re: Download your own midi's to your phone
You can just direct your browser to a free midi site like midicommunity dot com or musicrobot dot com and open the links.
It should open and play instantly!
Yay Motorola!
