Mobile Phone tool not working?

So i just got my USB cable (ebay) and when I plugged it in the first time the lil thing popped (win XP) up saying that it found new hardware and then disappeared real quick. Well, I downloaded a motorola USB modem driver and installed that, then I installed mobile phone tool and plugged the phone in again when it asked for it. So after the program installs the phone, (after the spinning clock) mobile phone tool opens up but it says "initalizing . . ." and stays like that . any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Check the cable connection to phone. Unplug/plug it in a few times until it works.
