v551 usb cable help

Purchased usb cable at online shop and got no software/driver with it,,, wish to be able to download/transfer ringtones, pictures, and maybe address book, have downloaded/installed p2k (not sure why), downloaded/installed skn6311 modem driver(not sure why), downloaded/installed mpt123c, mpt2.16 and mpt 3.11 versions,,,,when i open mpt, it tells me to turn on phone, plug in cable and hook to usb port and phone will install,,,but after bout 2 minutes I get a phone icon on screen saying "initializing.." and that is as far as it goes,,, when I try to do any thing it says "can't find phone"...What else do I need to do,,,, and plz explain in layman's terms plain enough for a guy old enough to have 11 grandkids to understand,,,, thx , btw, I have Win XP Pro,,,, and also cannot get a cingular signal out here at the house, if that matters??

Is it the kit that is provided by motorola that you bought?

No, wasn't part of a kit,,, I bought the usb cable (along with a couple of other accessories) online at "mobile connections". Thought all I needed then was mpt, but it isn't loading/installig the phone,,, are some sort of additional drivers or something needed???

My events went down a similar path, with regards to your uploading and waiting for something to happen. I started to systematically eliminate some of the potential causes, i.e. uploading MPT with virus and spyware software disengaged. I also noticed the sequence of connecting the cable with the phone on versus when the MPT booted up. What worked for me is to connect the phone (turned on) to the PC and then boot up MPT. It still takes a nearly 10 to 15 seconds for it to recognize the phone. Hope this helps.

so is the v400 usb cable different from the v551 cable???
