I can't say for sure, but my best guess would be that the mp3's must be transfered to the phone's actual memory in order for them to be used as ringtones.
They cannot.... you have to put them on the phone memory and rename them as .mid files

Use Sony Sound Forge, or a similar program, to reduce the bit rate on the mp3 clips. They only need to be like 64 kbps, as the sound quality on these phones aren't that great to begin with. Hope that helps.
www.goldwave.com has a generous "trial" period.... make your ringtones mono too.... you won;t know the difference when the phone speaker plays it
