I spend 2 to 3 months each year in Canada and want to know whether my old Motorola Startac TS7868W can be fitted with a new sim card? Also how can I tell if it is locked or unlocked and, if locked, how/who to unlock same?

In the past I merely phoned Verizon and for $10 for each month while in Canada I received free roaming there. Unfortunately my plan - Single Rate National - is no longer offered though I am grandfathered. To get Canadian roaming I would have to switch to Verizon's America's Choice plan which does not offer the same U.S. roaming coverage as Single Rate National. So my Verizon cell phone is of no use while north of the border.

Any help, suggestions will be most appreciated!

question 1. all sim card from old and new have the same size.
question 2. you can find if the phone is lock or not by inserting diff sim from the service provider of your phone. example your phone is lock to voice stream try to put cingular sim, if you see SIM NOT ACCEPTED or WRONG SIM your phone is lock. if you don't see this it means your phone is unlock.
question 3. mororola startac is kinda old and im not sure if unlocking soft for this phone still avail. try to seach ebay keywords MOTOROLA UNLOCKING or check www.cellularpager.com to see if they can unlock your phone. email them about you phone.

SIM Card physical size has not change but the storage size and memory may of the SIM has change. Old SIM cards were 32K in size now they are 64K. I realize my example is a iDEN phone- my Boost i285 needed to be repaired so bought off of eBay a Nextel i2000. The i2000plus worked greats are a phone I could not access my phone book. After calling Motorola I was told that the i285 had a 64K SIM and the i2000 was 32K SIM card phone. I have read discussions of Cingular 32K and 64K SIM card differences.

Try calling Motorola to see if they can give up any guidance on SIM card size and the phone current usability.

If all else fails buy a Nokia 3390b off of eBay selecting for either Fido or Rogers The 3390 is not as cute or as small as the StarTac but still small.

You want the Nokia 3390b-GSM 850/GSM 1900 not the Nokia 3390-GSM 1900 only.
