I'm an intelligent person....

...or so I thought before I tried to do almost ANYTHING to get things onto my new RAZR phone.

I found a cable--one that fit. Yay! The download for the mPT didn't work. Or it didn't detect my phone, or something. It seemed I needed a specific driver. Downloaded the appropriate driver tool. Got some wretched error trying to use that. Gave up.

That was last week. I'm back for more masochistic torture, figuring there just has to be a way to do this without that cable. This is a wireless device, after all. And yes, I saw some wonderful instructions on this board! What, email an attatchment? I can do that! Lo and behold, a message pops up with the name of the file I attatched! Yay! But...what's this...I couldn't view the picture I attatched. I tried sending a smaller file, I tried sending a midi file, all I could see was the name of the file I'd tried to send. HOW DO I ACCESS THE FILE?

I even tried coolservice.dk as a way to upload a file...I uploaded it fine, but don't know where to put in the code they gave me. http://wap.coolservice.dk doesn't seem to want to cooperate. (I tried going there on my phone's web browser since I figured that's how it's to go onto the phone, as well as on my computer just to see what would happen.)

I thought maybe chosing a premade thing would be more straightforward. Browsed through their cute little polyphonic ringtones, found one I wanted...T-mobile wasn't on their list of service providers! Is this where the problem is? Does t-mobile just stink?

Am I going at this all wrong?
Do I want to play with my expensive new toy a little too much?
Am I spending just a little too much time asking stupid questions?

Have you updated MPT (Motorola Phone Tools), to it's latest version? Shoud be 4.04b
And the cable you have, it is a data cable correct?

Was Voice Stream on the list of providers?

Are you going at this wrong, nah, some times, simple things are just not as simple as they seem.

As far as you wanting to play with your new phone (with all the neat toys), heck if they didn't want you to play with that stuff, they wouldn't have put it on their phones in the first place, so you my friend are blameless!

Are you asking too many questions? Heck no, can't learn without asking questions.

And just because you are having such a hard time, here are a few CPF$ to brighten you day.

With the Razr it is best to buy a data cable and CD from a store that sells your phone and it will be just like installing a program and then plugging in your phone. You can get some cool programs that you can just click the picture of your phone and it's like pushing the button. It gets very simple this way. Try it.

Of course, Cherise is talking about Motorola (or Mobile, depending on your software version) Phone Tools which can be freely downloaded from these forums. Why buy when you can have it for free? I got my cable and disk from eBay and realized that I paid $20.00 more than I should have. I already had 3 of the exact same cables (MP3 Player, Digital Camera and PDA).

When the software is properly installed and loaded, the on screen GUI should look just like your phone and when you click any of the GUI buttons, it will activate your phone. It is pretty darn cool and, as she says, it is very simple to use!

I'm pretty sure it's the latest version...it's mobile phone tools, I think. Is that the same as motorola phone tools?

And the cable...what else could it be besides a data cable?

I really don't get what's wrong with the setup. When I plug in my phone, it goes through the whole thing (it obviously detects SOMETHING because it responds to my plugging my phone in) and THEN says "mobile PhoneTools did not detect your phone. Do you want to manually install your phone with mobile PhoneTools?" So I do, and though I can't seem to figure out which option is the right one, I get it to start. Doesn't show my razr phone as the phone, and it can't communicate with it. Bla.

Was Voice Stream on the list of providers?

The service providers it offers are:
Sprint
Cingular (Cingular Orange)
AT&T (Cingular Blue)
Cincinnati Bell
Conestoga Wireless
Iowa Wireless
NPI Wireless
Suncom
United States Cellular

So, no. Voice Stream isn't there.

this may insult your intelligence, but are the drivers up to date on the cable?

I uninstalled and reinstalled mPT with the link tony provided. When I plugged my phone in, it claimed to be installing the phone only to tell me afterward that it wasn't detected. I manually installed it and found the V3 option, got the program to start but it still won't acknowledge my phone! Damn and Blast!

Any advice for doing this without mPT?

Assuming you're using Windows....
  • go to your Control Panel
  • Click on Phones/Modems
  • Click on the modems tab
  • delete any Motorola USB listed....
  • then go back & open up MPT tools & try to redetect the phone.

Hmm...there IS no Motorol USB listed. There's a mini PCI Modem, a mini PCI Modem Communication Port, and a Lucent Win Modem. Is that bad?

That means you do not have the correct drivers installed on your computer.
