    Hi
I'm new to this whole thing, and not very "cell phone intelligent", and I was hoping I could find some help here. This is my problem. I own a Motorola V66 that was working fine. Then I had it unlocked. I activated a SIM card with Rogers (in Canada, I live there too), then put it in the phone and turned it on. I was greeted with the regular welcome screen, except there appeared to be one too many icons on (you can see what I mean in the pic at the link I've included: ). Now this is what happens:

If you press menu button all the phone will do is play a continuous low tone. You have to shut the phone off to cancel this. If you play with it long enough it will display 411 for assistance menu but you can go no further. Sometimes you will get the volume control to display and it will go up and down on it's own. If you try to dial out you can't even put any numbers in it. If you phone the phone you can answer it but the person that phoned can't hear you.

I have a feeling this probably can't be fixed, but if anyone could give me any help by shedding some light on what might have caused this or how I could fix this, I would greatly appreciate it, thanks a lot!

    Howdy Nitroblu,

Sorry to hear about your problem. The question that comes to mind is, HOW did you unlock the phone? And if you downloaded software to unlock it yourself, did you backup the phones software BEFORE you unlocked it?

Hi, thanks for posting a reply so quickly. My friend actually unlocked it for me with this program he found called spunlock!ER V1.0. Unfortunately, he never backed up any of the files of the phone because he said he didn't have to since the program worked for him before without any problems. I'm starting to get the feeling that this program screwed up the phone then? Please let me know, and if there are any possible solutions let at this point, thanks.

Well time to have your friend find the lastest Firmware flash for your phone and put it back the way it was before he touched it. Any idiot that tells you they don't need to backup your phone or doesn't haev a phone to let you use until they get your's back in working order, is not someone you should be handing your phone to, to do anything to it. Which I'm afarid you just found out. Remember you only have your "friends" word that he's never had a problem with unlocking a phone before using that program.

If all this program did was remove the subsidy lock, there should be no reason that there would be "extra" icons or icons out of place.

So at the very least your friend should put you phone back in the condition it was before he messed with it. Cause your carrier won't do it now that's it's be fiddled with. But you can try that route and see what they say.

Hmmm... Okay, thanks so much for your help. How exactly would he be able to go about restoring the original settings of the phone since he never backed up the files? I'm not sure if the program just worked with the subsidy lock...I don't even know what that lock thing is LOL. He sent me a copy of the program in case I found some help for this to see if anyone knows what exactly the program does. I've uploaded the program online and it can be could here: http://rapidshare.de/files/14838204/motorola.zip.html
The file he said he used was the flash.exe file in the flashpasso folder. If you download this program from the link (it's free) and open it, please let me know what it did to the phone and if whatever happened is reversible without the backed-up files. I already tried bringing it in to a Rogers service centre and they said they could not fix it because the V66 is too old of a model now. Please let me know, thanks.

How he would fix it is to look online, until he found the original or an updated firmware version, for that phone and install it on the phone. He messed it up, he should find the fix. Tell him Google is his friend.

typing in v66 firmware version should at the very least lead him to where he can find versions of your phone's firmware to fix the problem.

The Subsidy Code is what the cell provider can give you to unlock the phone (and they do it for free). Beats having a friend screw up your phone!

If it were me, I'd take or send the phone to someone that knew what they were doing and pay the fee to get it reflashed to an updated version of the firmware.

okay, thanks a lot for your help. I asked Rogers for the subsidy code thing and they charge quite a hefty fee for it, wasn't free like you said. I will be sure to pass this message on to him, thanks again.

also, just out of curiosity so I know what to look for when he is doing this, how would he be able to upload the latest firmware onto the phone? could he do it by just directly hooking the phone up to the computer? or would he need another program to "reflash" it with the new firmware?

Nitroblu, since I have no idea what the program your friend used actually does, I'd say he should start there and see if it has some sort of UNDO feature.

Otherwise point him to these sites:
    http://www.vxxxstuff.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43
    http://www.motox.info/showthread.php?t=1297

He should have at least used MotoKit. It's mainly used to create a backup flex file from your phone, if the program he was using doesn't do backups. http://www.motomodding.com/vault/sof...okit_v1.06.rar
And tell your buddy he's looking for SAP4_G_01.06.31R firmware, for the Motorola V66.

That is if the phone was just a V66 and not a V66i.. there are two different firmwares for the phones, and not sure what using the wrong one might do.

    Motorola V66 SAP4_G_01.06.31R
    Motorola V66i SAP8_G_03.20.1AR

To find out if you have a V66 or V66i, check under the battery of the phone.

Rogers charges? I know a few people living here in Seattle that at one time used Rogers as their cell carrier and before they moved to the states, didn't get charged to unlock their phones. But it's very possible that they charge current cell users that do not plan on using their phone in another country.

Or since you are in Canada, you might try Bongowireless
http://www.bongowireless.com/pages.php?pageid=8 they can reflash your phone for you with the latest firmware upgrade as well.

Hope some of this helps you.

thanks again for all your help, I really appreciate it. I really don't have a clue how those programs work that you just gave me links to, or which ones to use. Hopefully he knows which one, thanks!

    Nitroblu,

Personally if this was my phone, I'd run, not walk to the nearest Bongowireless, and not let my friend near the phone again! Hell... I'd go so far as to have him pay to get it back to the way it was as well!!!

    Motorola Unlock

    Hey Nitroblu,

Ive never heard anything wuite like the problem you describe but it doesn't sound good. Even stranger because you were only trying to unlock your phone. Can I ask where your friend got this 'spunlock' software as I think people should be informed.

This seems to be a common problem with free unlock solutions. They are so unreliable and can cause significant problems. I was happy to pay a fee for myWWWWWWWWWWW because this garuntees the job is done problem free and doesn't risk injuring your phone. Anyone out there contemplating a phone unlock I suggest you do the same -
Take care of your mobiles ;-)
