Newbie Here.. asking ignorant questions..RUN!

Hi. I am a dinosaur. I got a computer last year, and I was given a gift of a Cell phone today. The party who gave it to me has no idea that he put a loaded revolver into the hands of a monkey.
Still it was kind of him. I'm hoping this is the sort of place where some experienced soul might help an old fool.
I understand that it is a Motorola Razr Special Black... whatever that means.
I'd like to get it functional.
I won it outright not on a plan or anything. It has a sim card in it. I guess that means I'm stuck with Rogers?

Wait let me start at the beginning.
1) I live in British Columbia Canada
2) I have a Razr (owned outright)
3) I'd like to know the least costly way to use it.
4) I don't use a cell much, mostly just to call out in case of an emergency.
5) I've read about a company called YAkcell which offers 3.5 cents a minute long distance. Sounds ok but I still have to register with someone according to them. I don't know what any of that means. Looking for someone to explain it to me in words an old farmer can understand.
Which plan should I get? Who is the cheapest/best. Is it possible to call out only and not call in? besides not answering the phone I mean.

Oh yes... when my phone rings, I'd like it to play the theme from the old Hockey Night in Canada... is that something I can learn to do here?

What carrier do you use. Rogers or Fido. After that is answered pleaes move to the appropriate forum.

3. Well with Rogers simply use the basic features with them and dont use the markup features. (for example-Long Distance) Use somthing like xpresscall.com or if you can find better.

4. I would go with a small plan to fit your needs. A rogers rep may try and force you onto a larger plan but if you dont need it DONT BUY IT. Although if you have a 150min plan and plan to use 700 mins IT IS CHEAPER to have the 700 plan and dont go over than having the 150 min plan and paying overage. Think about Eve and weekends. Do you make lots of calls on the weekends or from 6~9pm-6am weekdays? Do you know other people on rogers? Why not have Free Rogers to Rogers Calling?
