I just got my V170 cellphone yesterday...this is my second Motorola phone and I have to say, I'm just not happy :/ Same problem, both phones.
A while back I decided to go with a pay as you go phone, my contract type phone was costing way more money than it was worth. So I picked up a Tracfone v170 motorola, and it seems okay...except for texting. This may seem a minor problem, but, I cannot change the case of the letters..for instance, when attempting to go from all capitals (which it seems stuck in, currently) to normal mode (capital after a period, first letter of new sentence, etc) it just will NOT do it. The manual says to hit the up/down buttons on the circle key, but all that does is move the cursor through the text lines. I've tried other keys, they do as they're assigned to do but they do NOT change the letter case.
Incidentally this is my second motorola to do this, my first was a v139, and I just let my time run out on it and got a new one out of frustration with the difficulties texting. I didn't expect it was a motorola in general problem *g*.
Incidentally my boyfriend has a motorola as well, but his is a more expensive model, and he has no problems. So I guess it's NOT Motorola in general...but I refuse to pay big dollars for an emergency and occasional texting sort of phone...(his is his main phone, so worth it)
So please, anyone who knows how you REALLY change the text case, I'd greatly appreciate the knowlege
Yira

Re: V170 texting
Immediately AFTER entering your letter hit the up arrow (for UPPERcase) or the down arrow (for lowercase) the text will stay in that mode until you change it with the arrows.
