Number Change, No SIM Card

I am wondering if it is possible to change the number linked to a ESN without going to my provider. I have a contract with Solo Mobile (a canadian provider) and the piece of crap they call a phone I got for free when I signed. What I want to know, is how can I put my phone number on a Razr (also locked to Solo) by programming the phone. Neither phone has a SIM card, actually, no Solo phones have Sim Cards. Solo is a subsidiary of Bell, so it may be a similar process as Bell.

I know it is possible to clone my phone, but can I do that and have it only go to the Razr? (If I leave the old phone in a drawer somewhere.) And if yes, could someone give me the steps to clone it? (Nokia 6275i)

Thanks!

Re: Number Change, No SIM Card

Hi there, welcome to CPF.

If I understand you right all you want to do is change your phone, right? I do know Solo is a CDMA provider(hence the lack of SIM card obviously), but I don't know exactly how they handle things.

Typically in the US, with CDMA carrier you can change the ESN associated with your phone number by doing it yourself through the online account manager, calling in to CS, or taking it to a store. Usually doing it from the account manager on the web is free and a charge if the provider does it.

You are really not cloning anything, just changing the associated ESN. I don't know your reluctance to go to the provider but if you don't have the provision by Solo, to have your account on the web that is the way to do it. In the US it is a pretty common thing to do.

Am I missing something in your request?

That is pretty much what I want to do! The only reason I don't want to go to the store is because the charge will be anywhere from $20 to $35, and I am a poor starving student! haha.

I looked into doing it online (through my account with Solo...) and there doesn't seem to be any way to do it. I emailed them to see if there was a way to do it myself, and they told me to go into a Bell store...or leave my number on the piece of crap they call a phone. This CAN'T be right!

Ok, so I added the part about the piece of crap, but that is what it is!

Alright, so I'm a noob. What's a CSD? I'm thinking it's customer service...which I emailed...(and just got off the phone with, where I was told the same thing!)

dkavelaar, As Ellen said, if your provider does not support on-line ESN change and the Customer Service wants you to go to a store, you don't really have a choice.

If I were you, I would go to the store and try the "starving student" plea and maybe you will find an understanding rep who will do it for free or atleast at a reduced cost. As far as I know all the provider's reps have the authority to make exceptions.

Give it a try, what do you have to lose?

Good luck.
