Hey all. Ok, so prior to purchasing my new Z6W I had a really old phone. It did not have Bluetooth, custom ringtones, or anything. One of the cool perks I was looking forward to using on my Z6W was the custom ringtones feature. I drag-and-dropped the mp3 file into a custom folder, and of course I can play it as an mp3. But there is no option to make it my ringtone UGHHHH!!!!!!!! ^%$&^%$^&!!!!!! So, now what? Many thanks in advance for any help.

Are you talking about a "custom folder" on the phone itself? If so, which folder? Your phone's file system will have a certain folder to store your ringtones (e.g., my_ringers), and sounds stored in any other folder will not show up as ringtones. How are you loading the sound files: USB cable? Bluetooth adapter?

I was dragging-and-dropping through my USB cable (got it off some digital camera I had). The folder is called "Music", and its the default folder. Any ideas, my friend? Thanks for the help so far.

If your Z6w is like my Z6tv, then your ringtones would be stored on the phone in the /a/brew/mod/my_ringers directory; yours may be different, but I would check there first. Best way to access the file structure on your phone using a USB cable is to launch Motorola Software Update (MSU), and then P2kCommander 5.0.8. If you don't have these two software apps, you can download them for free ... Google the names and find a download link. Once in P2kCommander, you will be able to see both the folders/files on your PC and the folders/files on your phone, and will be able to transfer files both ways.

Ok, when I plug my phone in there is no such folder as "a/brew/etc..." Would you like me to provide the specific folder names? They are pretty much just: Pictures, Video, Music, and so forth.

Which software program are you using to access the folders/files on your phone? Again, I use MSU and P2K with my Z6tv, and they work fine.

No programs used at all. All I did was plug my phone in through USB, and I accessed the phone folders through "My Computer". The phone and my memory card then appeared as "Removable Disk F" and "Removable Disk G"...and I just clicked on 'em lol.

I appreciate the help so far, thanks so much!!!!

Re: Motorola Z6W - Need Some Help!!!!

What you are seeing in Removable Drive E: and F: are not the files on your phone, but the files on the microSD card that you use in your phone. If those files include the MP3s you want to use as ringtones, or the JPEG files you want to use as wallpapers, then first drag & drop them to a folder on your PC so that you can find them. Then download Motorola Software Update and P2kCommander (ver. 5.0.8) - both are free ... Google for them. Here's the order of events: (1) plug your USB cable into the PC and then plug it into the phone - you should get confirmation that a new device has been found; (2) launch Motorola Software Update - you should also get confirmation that the phone has been detected; (3) launch P2kCommander - you will see a screen with two columns (looks kinda like Windows Explorer), each showing the file system on your PC. Use the drop-down selector on either side and change from the C: drive on your PC to P2k/a, which is the root directory on your phone. Using the Copy command at the bottom of the screen, you should be able to transfer files from the PC to the phone, and vice versa. You may have to look for the ringtone folder on the phone (e.g., my_ringtones) ... see my earlier post. Let us know how that works out.

Re: Motorola Z6W - Need Some Help!!!!

So here I am back after a few days - and completely lost. I downloaded both MSU and P2k Commander, but I have no idea what I'm doing. Anyone care to waste their time and give me a step-by-step tutorial? Don't be afraid to put it in layman's terms, I really have no idea what I'm doing, lol. Pretty much I connect my phone and MSU cannot update it for some reason? And P2k doesn't recgonize Drive F, which is where it is located?

You need to make sure that MSU and P2K are installed on your computer's hard drive (C:drive); the F: drive is your USB flash drive, and it has NO bearing on the process. Here is the procedure in a nutshell:
    (1) After you have plugged the USB cable into your computer, turn the phone on and then plug the cable into the phone. You should then see that the computer has detected a new USB device.
    (2) Launch MSU; it should also detect the phone ... detects MEID #, or something like that. The "update" message has to do with finding a newer version of MSU ... don't worry about that.
    (3) Launch P2K (should have downloaded ver. 5.0.7 or 5.0.8). You should see a screen with identical file systems in the left and right columns on the screen ... file system of your computer's C: drive.
    (4) At the top of either column you will see a drop-down selector which will enable you to switch from the C: drive to your phone's root directory, /a. Double-click on the /a icon to expand the phone's file system display. From there, you can look for the directories where you ringtone and wallpaper files are located. You will be able to use the Copy command at the bottom of the columns to add files from the computer to the phone.
Once you get this far, let us know, and we can help you further. Again, don't worry about the E: or F: drives ... they have no bearing on accessing your phone's file system.

Ok, MSU doesn't recognize my phone and neither does P2k. WTF? I'm unsure of which MSU version I have, but I have P2K 5.1.0. My phone is a Z6W. What to dooooooooooo.

BTW - Celljimian, thanks alot for helping me with everything, I'd be completely lost if not for you. Appreciate it.

Re: Motorola Z6W - Need Some Help!!!!

YW, pdub. Now don't give up yet! First, just to let you know, my version of MSU is C01.11.36, and it's the latest, based on a search for newer versions. Are you sure that MSU isn't detecting your phone? If not, try plugging your data cable into a different USB port on the PC. After that, if it still appears that the phone is not being detected, leave the cable plugged into the PC, but unplug it from the phone & plug it back in.

Next, I downloaded P2k 5.1.0 and tried it with my phone ... works fine. Don't forget that you may have to tweak the options. Click on the Options drop-down command at the top of the P2kCommander screen and make sure you have the following selected:

    Mode: P2k/P2k05
P2k tuning: New (fast) 3G-P2k cmds
Manual settings (autodetect off): Use P2k05 commands

Leave everything else unchecked. P2K 5.1.0 didn't detect my Z6tv until I changed the default Options to these settings. Keep us posted.
