WARNING! When you factory reset your smartphone, all of your personal data located on the phone’s internal memory will be lost, including contacts, apps, ringtones, media files, downloaded content etc. In addition, all settings will be restored to factory values.

NOTE: Before you master reset your phone you can visit this thread for instructions on how you can back up and restore data on the Moto X Force.

Factory Reset via Settings:

  1. Tap “Apps” on the home screen
  2. Open “Settings
  3. Scroll to “Personal” and tap “Backup & reset
  4. Tap “Factory data reset
  5. If your phone is protected by a lock screen, enter the necessary PIN / password to proceed
  6. Tap “Reset phone” to confirm

Factory Reset via Recovery:

NOTE: If you are unable to reset the phone using the method above, you can try resetting it via Recovery instead. The recovery menu can be accessed by performing a combination of button presses, as follows:

  1. Make sure the phone is turned off
  2. Press and hold “Volume Down”, then press & hold “Power
  3. When a menu appears, release all buttons
  4. From the menu, press “Volume down” repeatedly to highlight “Recovery mode
  5. Press “Power” to select the highlighted option
  6. When the “No command” screen appears, press and hold “Power”, then press “Volume Up
  7. You should now have access to the Recovery menu. From here, press “Volume down” until you highlight “Wipe data / factory reset
  8. Press “Power
  9. Use “Volume down” to select “Userdata only” or “Userdata + personalized content
  10. Press “Power” to reset the phone
  11. Once the process is complete, “Reboot system now” should be highlighted. Press “Power” and wait for your smartphone to restart

Check for OS Updates:

NOTE: After a fresh factory reset it’s recommended to check if a newer OS version is available for download. To do this:

  1. Open the phone’s “Settings” menu
  2. Tap “About phone” under “System
  3. Tap “System updates
  4. In case an update is available, follow the on-screen instructions to download and apply it (a reboot may be required)
