The LG VX9800 through Verizon has the GPS capabilty. It is completly legal and runs $9.99 a month or $2.99 for a single use. I have it and it works great.

Definately illegal.. and also probably expensive cost per minute to call internationally..
Even with cellphone gps, it's not that accurate most of the time. I think your friends might have been playing a joke on you or something.
No government would even issue a warrent based on cellphone gps on most cases. Always look toward reasonable doubt and emergency case excuse reasons first.
Even Vodafone with gps, don't give 100% sucess rating.

    What service carrier?

What country did you call, and what country are you in? That sounds illegal to me, nobody should be able to use your's phone's GPS locator except your phone company and only with your permission. The GPS in your phone is required by law for e-911 service. You might be able to "disable" it in the settings menu, but that doesn't disable the ability of the GPS to be used by 911 for location purposes. There should be information in your user manual explaining all this, and if you have lost your user manual you can download it here.
