What a great resource. Thanks for posting that. Very useful.

Cingular will let you pick your number. When customers call in to get their number changed, we can type in a number and see if it is free, or give you a few options for numbers until you find one you like. Sometimes Cingular doesn't own the number that the customer wants. At least see what numbers close to it they may offer. The phone number just might not be free with any company though, sorry.

go do a number lookup on the internet and find out what company owns the number first....if its wireless over landline you have a slight chance. I know we dont have the power to select numbers like we did when digital first came out (hence my xxx-1111 number) but when we call in to do a phone number change (for harassing calls or whatever) we can usually sweet talk them a little into choosing WITHIN A RANGE of numbers...like they will say we have xxx-3285 through xxx-3350.....and then i would say ill take xxx-3300...thats about the best you can get (this is with verizon wireless btw)

Well, I've never tried to pick my own cell phone number, but here's the way phone numbers basically work. Different phone companies own different exchanges (the first 3 digits after the area code and the entire range thereafter). They can usually obtain individual numbers from another company upon request, a process called "porting a number", but there are still some companies that won't port another company's number over for one silly reason or another (money!).

In order to port a number to a cell phone, it MIGHT have to be registered to you already through another phone company. You might call your local landline provider, ask them if you can purchase a particular number from them (I wouldn't tell them I was gonna port the number in a week, they don't really need to know and they might be reluctant to give you a number that your cell company is just going to buy off them). That might work. Make sure your cell provider can port a number from another company, most of them can, and then find out if you can obtain the requested number through the local landline co. Hey, it's an idea...

Who is the phone company in your neck of the woods? "Ma' Bell" aka Bellsouth runs the landline game around here and she can do anything she wants to do if you ask her nicely. If they can't get the number for you, they should at least be able to tell you which company owns the exchange so you can try bargaining with them directly.

EDIT: I'm moving this to the General Service Provider forum.
