I have a UK phone for when I travel, its a pay as you go on Orange. If I unlock my Verizon S3 can I use the SIM card from my UK phone?

Also, do I need to follow the unlocking steps only when my unaccepted SIM card CAN FIND a network? For example, if I try to unlock in US and attempt to use my Orange SIm no network will be found.
