First post here, although I have been following this thread for months now. I have my serious doubts whether the i930 is even going to be released. So much now that I'm strongly considering dumping Nextel and going to Cingular.
First, we all know that Sprint bought Nextel. Sprint uses
CDMA. Are they really going to allow a dual band
iDEN/
GSM phone? I don't believe it. The only way that I can see it released is
maybe the
GSM is disabled.
Next,
iDEN is going away. Either they are going to create this 'new network' or just use
CDMA. My bet is use
CDMA.
CDMA is pretty good technology, but they haven't figured out how to get a comparible Direct Connect to work right (Sprint has ReadyLink, but I've heard that leaves a lot to be desired). I bet they put a lot of resources toward getting it to work with
CDMA.
Thre will probably never be integration between
iDEN and
CDMA as Sprint is already putting together a mass marketing campaign to move people from the dated (and at capacity) Nextel
iDEN network to Sprint phones.
Why would Sprint want to release a new smartphone and have people investing further into the current network?
Last I heard the i930 is so dated anyway (it was originally due out Q4 2004). Do they really want to push out a product like this?
My 2 cents. I hope I'm wrong, but my faith in Nextel is waning.
