This guy only sees the trees in front of him and not the forest. I have no idea why this guy even went with Nextel. He obviously did not research other carriers.
1. DC is great because you don't have to have the communication line constantly open. There's no interrupting each other as with duplex conversations. Communication is established instantly. You don't have to sit there listening to the phone ringing. It's like instant messaging, but instead of text it's voice.
2. Cell phone calls are billed by rounding up to the minute. So if you make a 12 second call you're charge for a whole minute . With DC you're charged for the actual seconds used, so if you have a 12 second DC connection, the actual time to charge is 12 seconds . But almost all Nextel plans have free DC minutes anyway.
3. For business use you have the ability to broadcast to people on your team (group). If you have 10 people in your group they all get the urgent message instantly instead of calling each idividually.

That is the stupidest thing I've heard too. I pay 20 cents a minute when I've been down to Argentina, Mexico, Brasil, and Canada for business to comunicate w/ my family. And not everyone has the "best deals".

Another perspective maybe? OK here's mine: I used to use alot of DC but I dont anymore. Even so, what's the point in Nextel engineering another phone when you don't have to use DC? There have been some very low minute DC plans that were pretty cheap. As for why I actually stay with Nextel, its pretty easy: Unlimited Plan. I use 10,000 minutes per month and the only other carrier who's got unlimited is crappy Sprint. Why doesnt Nextel have better, more up-to-date phones? Motorola has them by the balls. Nextel has THE best infrastructure for data and THE best customer service I have ever experienced. I would consider Verizon for their phones & coverage or TMobile for their phones & data if either had an unlimited plan but that's how it goes I guess. BTW Nextel's new Blackberry will have bluetooth, but no Motorola phone will. I'm going to replace my BB with the 860, I believe, and leave the 930 to someone else to guinea pig it.

Agreed DC sucks. I only use it cause my plan is unlimited DC. I think you can disable it though.

One thing you seem not to think of or maybe you do not use it, but the internet is run off the radio band, hence you do not use your mins for internet usage, witch is a key issue. It makes life so easy to be able to check email from anywhere.
Also the DC is great you know if the person you need to talk to got you or not. Im my line of work getting to know right away if my guys are doing what needs to be is huge, so much better that leaving a vm. So if you do not use it that is your problem, and to be honest if you are not a fan you do have a choise to leave nextel when youe contract is up. Remember you chose to get nextel you were not forced to.

Most of the web service go through a completely different part of the tower that is dedicated to Packet Data ... has nothing to do with Direct Connect or the Cellular ... There are Circut Data Services that go through the Cellular part, but are VERY slow and not marketed much ... All of the Packet Data Services are unlimited unless you have a Total Connect package to use your phone as a modem, and there is also an unlimited package for that too. One thing to keep in mind about the data services is that EVERY tower that Nextel has will have all 3 parts, cellular, DC, and Packet Data. Unlike every other company who will have separate coverage maps for cell, for 2way radio, and for internet services, nextel has one. If you have service, you can use all of your service ... oh and there's also that little thing of them moving to Broadband capabilities nationwide next year sometime. I personally would rather be able to plug my cellphone into my laptop and be able to access my company's network at broadband speeds than have a phone that is an 1/8th or 1/4th inch thinner

The only reason i got a Nextel was to DC, I have unlimited calling, Unlimited DC , I share it with my girl. I barely use the calling, Unless i call people, family etc who dont have them. I also order stuff online from it, I also have free incoming. Without DC on the phones there server is NOTHING. If they made a hot ass phone without DC i wouldn't buy it. I spend a lot of money on nextel.
I just bought my girl the i833 baby phat farm phone. She wanted it for christmas, And she got it. If i833 didn't have a DC she would of never got it because i would of tryed to DC her and it wouldn't. Anyways , I have a lot of phones i710 i730 i95, i have a **** load of phones and cases. ALL WITH DC , Without DC they loose my money. Case Closed.www.messina101.com

If you dont want DC, then dont get nextel. what would you be getting with a nextel that doesn't have direct connect? you'd just be getting a normal phone that just now has a camera. DC is the REASON i bought nextel cuz i have unlimited but only 500 minutes. DC is way better than that text messaging with phones were every number stands for 3 or 4 letters. now thats annoying.

Thanks for your comment, but I like Nextel for its quality and also for its unlimited calling plan. I'm in sales and unlimited calling has saved me thousands of dollars.
My whole point to this thread... which seems to have been lost is why cannot Nextel offer phones faster, smaller and more cutting edge like the other carriers to those customers (like me) who don't use the DC feature?
