Do you know other people with NEXTEL? It might not be worth it for you if you don't. NEXTEL has the highest customer retention rate in the industry, but it also has the highest prices for their rate plans. Cellular minutes are expensive on NEXTEL because they want you to rely on Direct Connect walkie-talkie connections. Data plans are more costly than the others as well. If you use the phone sparingly, you might want to check out Boost Mobile, NEXTEL's pay-as-you-go non-contracted service. Motorola is the exclusive manufacturer of NEXTEL's radios right now and they will not work on other carriers if you decide to ditch because NEXTEL is the exclusive user of iDEN in the U.S. Other providers such as Stingular, AT&T Worthless, T-No, Whoreizon, No-da-fone, use other cellular transmission standards.

#1: Find out how many people you know who have NEXTEL. NEXTEL is cheap if you use Direct Connect most of the time you're on the phone. Cell minutes will kill as their plans have limited minutes for cell unless you pay mucho $$$. The farther these people are away from you also factors in as most of the "unlimited" Direct Connect included in your plan is for your local coverage area only. Check the coverage maps at http://nextel.com for more info.

#2: Can you sacrifice the latest games, toys, and other worthless nonsense many people put in their phones? NEXTEL is ssssllllloooowwwlllllyyyyy working on this, but they are still very much a business-oriented company who would rather you use the Java on your phone for work applications than games.

#3: Since Motorola is the exclusive manufacturer of NEXTEL's radios right now, don't expect to have the latest multi-mega-pixel video/still cam that can make toast, tell you when your refridgerator is empty, and communicate with the Star Fleet. They've always been behind the times on the latest toys and gadgets outside the core needs of NEXTEL's Direct Connect service and business-oriented clientelle.

i agree with the above post 100 percent. if you dont really know anyone that has nextel and dont plan on using the 2way feature you are really wasting your money. i use my 2way way more than my regular phone minutes so it is worth it to me. there phones are kinda old and blah compared to other companies. they dont really have any really cool phones like sprint/verizon/cingular does. they do have good customer service as long as you call account services and dont deal with there regular customer service. another good feature is unlimited incoming calls. but the main thing you need to think about is will you take full advantage of the 2way and are you willing to be behing in all the new phones and cool features.

i for one like nextel. i use to be with sprint for a long time. one disadvantage with nextel is there billing is a little confusing at first.
