I have nextel service but want motorola razor????

Hey everyone, I have a nextel phone along with service, I was wondering if I can get the motorola razor while still using nextel, is it possible? if so can someone please let me know what I have to do. someone told me I have to get my sim card unlocked and then get the razor phone unlocked. is this correct.
